New truck with 5.4

I've been toying with buying a new f250, but I think I want a 5.4 engine. All 4 dealers I have talked to say they don't have one and won't be getting one unless I special order one because they are verry unpopular. Does anyone have any ideas on why? I think they only came out with the 5.4 in the F 250 for 05

the 5.4 has been out in the SD for quite some time. this is the first year for the 300hp 24valve V-8 though. in the past, some have thought that the 260hp 16v V-8 might be underpowered for this truck, especially if you tow, but i have no experience on this. i do occasionally tow, so i bought the new 30v V-10, and i had to order mine as well. i looked at the states and only 15% or so of the standard trucks rolling out of the plants will have the v-8, even less for the v-10

Well like Agdoctor said they are somewhat unpopular in the SD line. The motor has been offered in the SD since they(SD) came out in 99. Most people feel that the F150 is a good fit for the 5.4L since its a lighter truck, but if you look at the weights between the F150 and the SD line its somewhat suprising. A regular cab long box 4x4 SD weighs more than an extended cab short box 4x4 F150. Now suddenly the 5.4L that was at home in the F150 has to pull around almost 1000lb or more when its unloaded. The best comparison of the 5.4L in a SD would be comparing a 4.6L in an F150. It will get you around, you won't have alot of power, but it will do it. Its the same way with towing. It will tow, but don't plan on doing it very fast or gracefully. Most people I see bashing the 5.4L in the SD are ones that don't own one, and the ones who own one are usually happy with them. You don't usually see many around since resale value on them is substantially lower than one with a V10 or PSD. Also consider than the V10 is only a $600 option when ordering new so most people opt for that since the mpg hit is minimal and it gives the extra hp to tow if they have the need. I will say this, I own a 99 F250 and even with the PSD it is one VERY heavy truck. I can really see the 5.4L struggling in the truck unloaded let alone towing.

The '04 and older SD's with the 5.4l were underpowered, especially considering the poor fuel economy.

Perhaps the 3 valve '05's are different, but I would get a v-10 over a '04 5.4l. Fuel economy is no worse, performance is much better and the resale value is much higher.

The 2 local dealers by me have more 5.4 SD than deisel or v10's. I am having a hard time locating a PS CC short bed to test drive.

South Shore Ford shows to have 2 04's in stock both CC with the SB and PSD 6.0 and 3 05's with the same

Here's the link to Fords X-Plan pricing, you can also search local inventory

I owned a 99 Standard cab 4x4 Super duty with a 5.4. Not bad unloaded, actually a smooth motor that moved along if you let it rev.

However, resale was horrible- took forever to sell. If you can swing the payment, the diesel will sell itself at trade-in time. You will make back that extra $$ hit in mileage savings and resale value, if you drive it over 60,000 miles.

The v-10 is agreat motor too- mileage is the same. My brother has the v-10 and I had the v-8. Same mileage- 10-13 mpg.

I am looking at the new f250..i want a crew cab xlt fx4..but i can't decide which engine...i dont know wheter to go with the v10 or the diesel...i dont tow that much...but i do want sumpthing that i can supe up easy and cheaply..i may lift it and put sum big rubber on it...so i can go off roading but burn those rice burners...which one would be better for me i know with the v10 you can get a supercharger from whipple for around $4,500, which would add 50% to the hp and torque, but you can get the banks power big hoss bundle for around $2,500 which would add around 138 hp and 275 ft lbs of torque. the price differnce for the diesel and the v10 is about $4,600 in the SD thanks for the help

If you have a family member that delivers or has any kind of business relationship with Ford they are elgible, you might also check with the dealer as they sometimes give them out to customers.

Your supposed to show a co id to the dealer when doing the paper work but as of yet I have never shown any id, just given them the plan # that you get from Ford, my brother even used it for a purchase, hope that helps.

PS, if you know anyone who actually works for Ford they get the A plan, not sure how much better that is but every penny counts!!

Kind of off topic, but 5.4's in SD's are quite popular in these parts. You see a lot more of them than V10's. One dealer has been getting piles of 5.4 F250 CC SWB 4X4 XLT's in with no options other than an automatic. Seems like they must be quite a seller for them.
