Post Exhaust systems for the V10?

Looking for a cat-back system for my V10 (or at least a nice sounding muffler). Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket systems? I was told by my local mechanic that I should not modify the exhaust on a V10 because it will not sound good. "Too busy" were his words. Hoping one of you guys are able to prove him wrong cause my V10 is just too quiet.(plus a few extra horses never hurts.;-)
Thanks

Thumbs up

Jardine lists one for $269 in thier catalog. They have the best HP and torque ratings by far. Personally I am using a Flowmaster Delta 40 series. Jardine failed to reply to my request for 5.4L information.

Borla, Banks, Gibson and Dynomax make systems for the SD trucks. I bought a Borla for my truck. It is louder but lacks the rumble/gurgle that I was looking for. If I were to do it over again I think I'd buy the Gibson or Dynomax. It's about $100 cheaper. If money is no object then get the Banks Power Pack. At $1437 it isn't cheap but should really wake up your truck.

Your friend is right about the V10, i have a friend who runs a muffler shop, and there is three exhaust systems he will not put on performance mufflers without them signing a paper, that what they want, is what they get.
The 3 systems are Dodge V10 Ford V10 and the new Chevy 5.3
He says it has to be the firing order, they sound like crap,90% of the ones he has put on, come back and have the stock muffler put back on. He was giving them a break on prices, but now he charges them the regular price for a muffler replacement.
Just thought you might want to know this.....

I put the dynomax muffler on mine (v10) and am very happy with the sound characteristics. For sound volume I don't think its any louder but it did deepen the tones, with just the edge of a snarl at idle. It's a small change but just what I wanted sound wise. I just changed the muffler since the stock pipes looked pretty decent, I couldn't see any justification for a complete system. Performance increases (I put a K&N in at the same time) are modest but noticeable when running against someone who prior ran side by side with me. I didn't start to pull until over 60, makes sense to me since volume is more important at the other end. I'm also experiencing about 1mpg better after the muffler/filter change.

In case anyone was interested, this is a letter that I received from Flowmaster.
Have Fun. --Chris

Dear Chris:

Thank you for you inquiry to us here at Flowmaster. We apologize for the
delay in our response back to you, however do appreciate your patience.

Some very important considerations were given to the V10 Ford system we now
offer. Primarily, V10's tend to sound much more like V6's, unlike the bass
quality rumble of a V8. This higher pitch of sound, with more aggressive
mufflers, can be more like an old Jaquar on steroids, than the sound you are
familiar with.

The most pleasing sound from these engines, in our opinion, is accomplished
by less aggressive sound levels and lots of bass quality, hence the
selection of the 70 Series. Unfortunately, most other mufflers are a
variation of a glasspack or "sound absorption" designs, producing that
"blatty" sound with lots of interior resonance.

I hope this answers your concerns regarding the #17229 kit and you continue
to be a long time customer.

Should you require any further assistance, please call me at (800)544-4761
ext. 451.

Sincerely,

Dan Johnson

I called gale banks and they said that the
powerpack isn't available for the truck yet;
it's only available on the motorhome as of
now, but they're really working on it.

I also asked them about the exhaust sound and
they said that as far as the V10 motorhome
goes, it sounds pretty much like stock but
1 or 2 db higher.

And so, in the meantime.. what's the next
best system (hp/torque and rpm etc)?
