Post Herculiner in a F250

Did this yesterday on my new F250. Came out great. Had a quart left over for touch up. Mask off really well and get plenty of gloves and xylene for clean up.

Wow! Looks great! Is that some of the Herculiner stuff I see you spilled on your back window? Anyhow, I see you have a long bed...what size container does it come in? I have a longbed and a camper shell. The inside of the camper shell is white and would like to try that stuff on it (top and sides). What are the installation preps? Lots of sanding? How long does it take? Do you mind me asking this many questions? I do have another question I would like to ask about something else. If you can, please drop me a line at truckin4@home.com Thanks!

Oh yeah...forgot to tell you...I was kidding about the back window. Does that stuff have a lot of toxic fumes when applying? I would rather not remove my camper shell if I decide to do it...but I don't want to kill myself either! Thanks again!

Gloves? Well gosh, that sure takes half the fun out of it! It's pretty neat to see water bead off of your hands for a week.

Alright you bunch of wise acres! with a clean truck bed it took about four hours of prep time. I started the night before with taping off and the first scuffing with the 3M pad that comes with the kit. Kit is $99 at K-Mart. You will need a quart of xylene and lots of towel and gloves cause this stuff sticks to everything! Then the next morning I went over everthing with the pad again and wiped it all down with xylene. let that dry off for 30 minutes. I started that next morning at 8:00 am and was finished at 5:00 PM with four hour wait between coats. The first coat which involves a lot of brush work to cut it in takes a couple of hours. Then you wait. Seems like forever but in my case it was four hours and the second coat goes on quick. Remove the tape and clean any mistakes immediately there after while it is still "green". By the way this was a short bed. I still have few little spots to touch up but I had a quart left over that I transfered intoa clean mayonaise jar and put a little xylene on top to protect it. Savings? $250 Downside? no warranty and a sore back! They have a web site and all this is there in detail. www.herculiner.com

Looks great. Do you think you got it on thick? Some of the dealers claim they apply it up to 1/4 ". Also, I noticed that you didn't do the back bed rail. Any particular reason?

I am pretty sure it is at least 1/16th of an inch thick or better. Approaching 1/4 inch thick. I debated on were to end it. I finally chose the point where the lip turns back up because it would not show a rough edge were it to develop and I could always add on up, but removing is not a practical option. I am still debating wether or not to bring it up more on the rail. I should mention that I was extremly nervous about tackling this on a new truck! To make matters worse, my Father in Law is a body shop man and he will find fault in what I do no matter what so it had to be perfect.

Hey J-C, half the fun is sniffin all that xylene. Sort of a fringe benefit. That and a couple of cold ones will make you put on that old Jimmy Hendricks album.

I'll try to get to Clemson, so I can inspect your work up close. You can compare yours to my $400 Rhino-liner. I expect to be on the East Coast in 2001. See ya then
(I'll buy the cold-ones and we can talk towing stuff!)

It's a deal J-C. Looking forward to it. There is some nice country around here. Historic places, Lakes, waterfalls and Blue Ridge mountains all around us. We are just
10 miles off Interstate 85 halfway between Charlotte North Carolina and Atlanta Georgia.

Love it so far. I got 13.8 MPG on my first documentable tank of gas and that included some mountain driving and it is just over 500 miles on the odometer.

Well she hasn't left me yet and had ridden in it but not driven it yet.

Cphilip: your liner looks great!!! So, since you did all the work yourself and saved a ton of $$$, what-cha doing with all that extra cash???? May I suggest changing out your crappy (my opinion) ford speakers and having some really nice ones installed!!! After all Jimmy Hendricks deserves to be played LOUD, but with style!!!
