Question To those who had their 99 5.4L replaced by ford.....

My truck is gettting a new engine today because this weekend it basically blew up. The dealer says something went wrong mechanically inside the engine and ford has authorized a new one under warranty. ? is is this going to be the 235hp or the 260hp? also is it possible to pay the upgrade cost to a v-10?

Hey 4x4!
That really sucks about your motor. Lucky you did not have a PS that died. My neighbor's 1999 PS had his engine go dead with 10K on it. He was without his rig for 2 months! Supposedly that is how long it will take at this time to get a new PS motor in. Not cool.
Did the dealer give you any hassle about the lift?

Sorry I can not answer you question but if I had to guess, the dealer will only re-install what came with your truck. It starts to get tricky with the laws when you drop a different engine in a new vehicle and the VIN number still states that it had the older engine in it. I guess it all depends on what you are getting replaced. Most of the time you will not get a WHOLE NEW ENGINE top to bottom. You may only get the top or the botttom half of the motor replaced. If that is the case, then they are going to have to give you what was originally in there.

Good luck to you.

Another surprise I found out..they only have to give you rebuilt parts on a warrenty repair. At 4k I got a rebuilt power steering pump put on my ride. I fought and I fought and I fought....I lost.

Good luck with the new mill.

Well the dealer said it was a "whole brand new engine" and that he didn't know if it was going to be the 235 or the 260 version. Dealer really gave me no hassles about anything...I dropped it off sunday and he calls me today and tells me they are putting in a new motor, no ?'s or anything. I'll let ya'll know how all this turns out.....

Well got a new 235 hp engine put in today.
Tried to get the 260 but supposedly the connections are different on the two engines. Also tried to upgrade to a v-10 but was also told that these were not interchangeable....Well can't really complain cuz i did get a new engine..

4x4:

Had my 5.4 replaced in December. I still wonder which model of engine it really is. There is so many different variations on different rigs. I was concerned that one label on the head said "Reg. Duty". Superduty trucks are supposed to have "Heavy Duty" engines according to the manual, and label under the hood.

I also think the new engine may be the 260-hp version. The real difference is in the heads and cam so it is hard to tell for sure.
I do know that the upgraded heads have square intake ports instead of oval ones but that would require the removal of the intake manifold to confirm. The change in the manifolds had only a minimal hp effect and did not necessarily coincide with the high-output heads.

What do the labels on your engine say? Here is what mine says:

The labels on the heads say "NEW_DOWEL 5.4 Reg. Duty 19:43 B Mach 5-19-99 8656". The Engine label on the valve cover says "ke881aa Ford Windsor Ont. Canada 991322211 433 5.4 5-12-99"

I haven't got a chance to look at my engine yet, but the dealer stapled a piece of paper to my invoice that read all 99 Super Duty have the NPI engines(Non-power improvements) and that all 00's had PI engines(power improvements) The paper goes on to say that the parts from each of these engines are not interchangeable because they have differences including the port heads.... Anyways I'll take a look at the engine to see what it says when I get a chance....Take Care 4x4
