Post Are all SD charged commercial registration?

Hi all,
I've never own a pickup truck but I'm looking at the F250 SD. I heard that all pickup trucks are charged an annual commercial registration by the DMV even if it's not used for commercial business. I'm wondering if that's true? If yes, how much more expensive are they compare to non-commercial registration?
Thanks for any info.

Well that probably differs state to state. In louisiana Trucks have 4 year plates while cars have 2. This is unless you choose a fancy custom plate. ( Personalized, University, Firefighter, etc ) If you do choose a custom plate you drop back down to 2 years.

Here is South Carolina I was charged $110 for two years for a F250 SC SD. Had to do with the weight of the vehicle. All vehicles with a curb weight of over 5000 pounds are in this category and/or if combined weight of truck and a trailer would exceed 9000 pounds it also put you in this category. My F150 was considered under. It was $29 a year with new plates every two years paid on the aniversary of the purchase/registration. $52 more for the SD, paid every two years with a new plate every two years. All due in March.

minhlang, I see that you are also in California. As ccla pointed out, each state has their own laws. In California, EVERY truck gets a Commercial plate. The only way to NOT have a commercial plate is to move to a different state.
The CA DMV uses every trick in the book to squeeze an extra penny out of its citizens. They are worse than the old IRS.
Good luck.
My annual registration in CA is $900. The same truck in South Dakota is $53.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm in the Los Angeles area of California and from reading the replies definitely we're being ripped off here as far as DMV registration fee :-). I currently drive a 1990 Ford Bronco and I'm paying $95 a year for registration and I thought it's cheap before I read what cphilip is paying for his 2000 SD!

$900 a year for a F250 SD registration in California is expensive! I'm thinking of getting a SD because I'm getting tired of towing my dirt bike on a trailer behind my Bronco.

Minh,
You sure won't need a trailer for the dirt bike with a SD. It'll just sit in the bed and the SD won't even know it's there

CA rips you off in their outrageously high "personal property tax" built into their "registration" fees.

You have to move to a state that does NOT base their registration fee on the value of the truck to avoid those taxes.

Good Luck - (I love my SD )

Wow! Only $444. Did you pay for a whole year? If not, watch out when you renew them

Thumbs up

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, "Truck plates are based on the gross weight of the vehicle plus the maximum load to be carried or pulled at any one time. Local plates are issued to trucks that will not be driven beyond a 50 mile radius of the owner's registered address."

Not only is my SD F-250 Crew Cab not registered as a commercial vehicle, I was able to get the BL6 designation, (since my Explorer had personalized truck plates with the BL6 (Beyond Local 6000 lbs.) plates) which is $25.75 annually, vs. the BL12 designation, which is $38.25, a $12.50 difference per year.

When I lived in Indiana, I noticed a truck that had Missouri Local plates, funny thing being that Indiana is quite a bit more than 50 miles from ANY part of Missouri!

Cool

In Arizona, 10,000 GVW you do not need commercial plates. Over 10,000 GVW you must buy commercial plates. No big deal here, I think it was less than $20.00 more on a $400.00 license fee I think. (Maybe more) They really bend you over in this state
