wich motor is best??????????
I am thinking about getting a superduty 4x4 extra cab with an automatic transmission. I can't decide wich motor would be best for my particular needs. I am going to put bigger wheels and tires on it(mudders or good all -terrain)and it will see time in the mud and snow. It will also have to be able to pull a 2 horse trailer loaded with clydesdales. This truck will be my everyday driver so gas mileage is also a concern. The diesel has the power and the gas mileage but it weighs so much I don't know about the mud and snow aspect.little bit pricey too. I don't know if the 5.4 will have enough power or not. The v-10 I know absolutely nothing about.Any help is apprectiated.

I have a Y2K F-250 SD SC 4X4 with the V-10 and an auto. I'm glad that I purchased the V-10 in my truck. While I don't put down anyone who buys a different engine, I felt that the V-10 was best for my use. The 5.4 has 260 HP and I'm not sure of the torque ratings. The V-10 is rated 310HP and 425 FT/LBS torque. Since you are planning to put tall tires on your truck, gears and engine are an important consideration. The V-10 will have more than enough power for your use. Also, the V-10 doesn't cost that much over the base V-8.

lightningcrashz,
Im not sure how the PSD performs with an auto but from experience I can out pull and out haul the V10 with the 6 speed. I have only a K&N filter and some minor reprograming for mod's. It has also been said diesels provide longer overall life than gassers. (just thought you should hear from the diesel crowd too)

lightingcrashz: upkeep on a diesel is a piece of cake when you're married to a diesel mechanic
Seriously though, you should get over 200k on a diesel before having to do anything major on it. Yes it will cost more, but it's longivity is way better than the gasser engines. Oil changes cost more (14+ quarts of oil each time) but fuel is cheaper and milage is better. The diesel will tow anything you hitch behind it. I pull a 30'travel trailer w/mine (at any speed) I also added a Superchip for more hp/torque. You said this would be your daily driver, so's mine. I use it for grocerys, kids and just getting me around town. Try talking w/the diesel crowd over on www.ford-diesel.com about how the diesel performs in snow/ice situations. I'm in the south and about the only ice we get to see is in the fridge. As far as pulling those draft horses, get the diesel. You'll never want for more power!!! And if you order the truck, instead of getting it off the lot, you can knock off quite a few dollars off the price. (making that diesel even more appealing) I've got the 6speed so I can't say how the auto transmission will work out. If you do decide that the diesel just isn't right for you, then go w/the V10. From what I've heard, it gets lousy gas milage but it's a really good working engine and would do the job of pulling your trailer.

tina,
14 quarts of oil, geeze. Up here in oregon the diesel is more expensive than the unleaded gas. Its price went up along with gas and didn't come back down. We don't have any major oil refineries in oregon so we we kinda get hosed on gas prices.Last summer oregon had the dubious honor of having the highest gas prices in the lower 48 states all summer long.
