Fast: You're wrong on the turbo. They had a turbo in late 92 and they ran it till the PSD's came out. I think you could still order a NA engine too.

I believe it was a mid-production year change for '94 and only in manuals until '95 when powerstroke was introduced and you could get it in an auto.
Thats from Ford-diesel.com

Your talking about the PowerStoke...

I have the 94 brochure in front of me...Heres what they say

NATURALLY ASPIRED AND TURBOCHARGED DIESELS

The optional diesel v-8 is engineered to deiliver rugged, high torque performance of various conditions

Also available is the 7.3L turbo.

NA engine Turbo

HP: (185) (190)
TQ: (360) (395)

The turbo was used in late 1992's and run til the PSD's came out.

Talking

My dad's single axle semi, hooked to a full grain trailer full of corn (legal load: 66,000 lbs.) had the tranny go out 14 miles from the grain elevator. He pulled it to the elevator with his 1978 F150 4x4. He had to put it in 4wd just to get it to move (otherwise the pickup would sit and spin the rear tires.) Top speed: 40 mph. But it got there, with someone else in the semi to run the brakes. My grandpa did the same thing last week with a different semi and one of his late-80's F150 4x4's. It's possible, but slow and VERY hard on trannies.

Thumbs down

i have a 97 f-150 4.6 triton sorryest truck i ever owned. went through 2 tranis in 2 years just pulling a riding mower around and didnt pull it very well either. it is one of the worst trucks ive ever owned. i traded a 93 4.3 vortec v6 s-10 in for it because i thought i would like the v8 a little better but it has more trouble with the trailer than the little truck did. so im trading it in for a dodge gonna try them now. i dono maybe i just got a lemon.

Unhappy

4.6Triton: sorry to hear that. Of course there's lemons, you can get them in any make and any model. Was the tranies fixed under warrenty??? And what exactly went wrong?? Pulling your little trailer, like you mentioned, would NOT have made the transmission go bad. I've personally owed a fantastic 97 4.6 triton 5speed that ran (and pulled) like a dream. Do some reading around here. Sure there's been a few w/some problems but for the most part, most of us have had relitively trouble free driving. Usually, if someone is having some kind of problem, they post it here and someone else here most likely will know how to fix it.

I once pulled 36000 lb John Deere combine with 86 nissan pickup 4 cyl, but that was in 4 low for about 25 feet so we could get it to a point to fix it.

Did you realize you pulled up an almost 2 year old post?

Oh, while I'm here, about 7300# with my Expy. On a regular basis it's closer to about 7100# as I don't usually keep if full of fuel.

Next month, it's a 300 mile trip and I'll probably be at about 7400#-7500# with just over a weeks worth of "stuff" for 7 days on Lake Ouachita.

Hey FamilyRide...

...are you talking about Lake Ouachita by Hot Springs..? If so, that is my neck of the world.

That's the one!. It started out a few families heading up there bringing our boats and satying on an 82' houseboat, and now it's turned into a Crownline Ralley with I think 35 families/about 110 people confirmed to go. Kinda funny, we'll be one of the only non-Crownline boat owners there.

I think there are some folks form Benton that will be there too. People are coming from all over Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and I think Kansas and Tennessee.
