Post PSD or V10?

I have been looking into buying a new F250, the biggest concern I have is which engine to get. I love the sound and torque of a Diesel but at almost 6000 for it, it is hard to justify. I have driven a V10 and it felt very sluggish, not what I expected. Do you all think I would be better off buying a V10 and slapping on an aftermarket supercharger or just go with the PSD? Just wondering what you all would do if you had to do it over again, thanks.

Where in the world are you looking at the Powerstroke costing almost 6k???? I got mine in Jan 00 and only paid $3910 for it. OK, OK, I know it's gone up since then but only a couple of hundred or so. please check this site www.kbb.com I got mine for invoice cost not MSRP. If you've got the time to order the truck of your dreams, then you can usually get it cheaper than what's on the dealers lot.
Have you driven any PSD's to compair them against the V10??? I can tell you, "IF" the PSD feels sluggish, it will feel different after you get about 10k miles on it. I am of course bias towards the PSD but there are also plenty of folks here that love the V10. They both have good and bad points to them. (although I personally havent found any for the PSD ) check out www.ford-diesel.com for way more info than you ever thought to ask about the diesel

Well, given the other vehicles you drive, the SuperDuty's are gonna seem a bit 'sluggish'. It has something to do with them weighing 6000lbs empty..

The 'quickest' Superduty will probably have a V10 + 4.30 rear end. Although the PSD will be right there with you..

SVT-Snake,

I have driven both the PSD and V-10, as a matter of fact, I own a V-10...

While I didn't find the PSD "sluggish" I did note a bit of turbo lag when I drove it...

I'm not quite sure how to respond to your "sluggish" V-10 comments because I find my V-10 "anything but sluggish"!!! Of course, if your expecting "muscle car performance" with a #7100 truck (my truck weight)(only) fully loaded with camping gear) then I guess it would probably be slower than you have expected and might be somewhat disappointing...

As far as what to buy, you have to analyze your wants and needs... The PSD is a great motor but I couldn't justify it for a number of reasons... I'm very happy with the V-10, a good strong motor that is very quick in my truck... If you tow a heavy load high miles than the PSD is probably for you... BTW, my V-10 is the newer version with the higher HP/Torque ratings...

Best Regards,
Les

I know it is all about personal preference, so I would most likely go with the PSD. Your right about the added cost of a PSD, I have no idea why I typed that.

Now i just need a flat bed to haul the Lightning around with!

Cool

We chose the diesel over the V10 and have not been displeased. Besides, if it is GAS, it has to be a CHEVY

I guess I will have to eat these words --- bought a Lightning 3-2-2000 --- definitely not a Chevy!!!!

I've got the V-10 and I like it, but I wish I would have gotten the PSD. Take my advice, go with the PSD. You won't regret it.

V10 with PSD intercooler (bolts right in) and 10 psi from a Paxton Novi. This is what I want to do, needless to say it will cost as much as a PSD, but oh how cool! I would expect about 325-340 rwhp and 430-450 Trq, even more with headers, high flow cats, and muffler. Will I be the first? Right now my "wimpy" 5.4 is making 290 rwhp and 375 TRQ. The last 2K V10 5spd I dynoed put down a disappointing 212 rwhp (stock) and then 225 with an Superchip.....310 at the flywheel, that's no the truth Ford!.

I am thoroughly convinced that the PSD is the best thing since sliced bread. I have an F-150 right now, but I want a PSD dually so bad that I can taste it. A friend and I went to a lot, and found two trucks that would have been identical, except that one was a PSD and the other was a V10. We then proceeded to race these trucks for 11 miles, the PSD winning by a long shot, and it was a pretty rough race, too, a lot of hills. We then switched trucks, to see if the driver had anything to do with it, and the PSD ran away with it again. If this influences your decision, that's great, but it's a fun story to tell and this is as close to any thread that I saw fit to put it in. *L*

I recently went with a friend to test drive SDs, and we took out both a PSD and a V10. Both were extended cab 4x4s, and the V10 felt WAY more powerful, the PSD was just plain sluggish. Mileage really isn't an issue either, I calculated out that it would take around 80k miles for the PSDs better mileage to just make up the sticker price difference, factor in the higher maintenance costs of the diesel and that probably goes over 100k to break even. After driving both my friend ordered a V10.

I did all the math before purchasing a SD last year. I limited my choices to the PSD and the V-10. In my case, the PSD was not even close to being a viable option. I didn't want to pay for 15 qt. oil changes, fuel additives, coolant additives, test strips, and more expensive fuel and oil filters. Furthermore, I didn't want to have to plug it in from Nov. to March, since it's so cold here. Before a diesel owner jumps me about "you don't have to plug them in", I've owned diesels before and I've got friends with PSDs; you'll plug them in here, or they won't start. Yes, I bought a V-10. It is as stock as the day it left the factory, and no, a stock PSD won't run with it. It doesn't need a chip to "run" either. The PSD may be better if a person towed a LOT, otherwise, no way. As far as mileage, I've seen some pretty wild claims by some truck owners. My F-250 4x4 SD SC V-10/auto gives 14.5 highway. Besides, my V-10 doesn't have the dreaded, still unfixable "cackle".

WWBF150,

What gear ratio does your truck have?

Dan4x4, I've got a 3.73 axle ratio. The mileage that I posted was recorded when the truck had 4500 miles on it.
