Red face STEERING/BRAKING PROBLEMS

Does anybody have this problem.
The steering wheel will not turn when you press on the brake?
I seen a few post in Ford Truck Enthusiasts http://www.ford-trucks.com/ If you did see them. I would go and check them out.

I've read of this problem, must have been over on the diesel-ford board. It sounds like a real safety problem but I believe Ford says their usual quote "normal operation". I guess when you're making that u-turn in the road and some idiot tries to pass you that instead of using the brake and turning away from him, you will just have to hit the guy and tell the cop that it's "normal operation"!!!

It is a known problem and Ford doesn't have a fix yet. Most noticed at a stop and the faster you are rolling the less problem there is. It does make parking a big trailer so much fun.

I've heard that there is a Ford Technical Service Bulletin, #99-25-8, out on this problem. It involves contaminated power steering fluid. First they try to clean the fluid and if that doesn't work, replace the power steering pump and/or hydroboost. These are not cheap parts, but they are covered under the standard warranty.

The problem only seems to be on the PSD trucks due to the fact that the power steering pump is also used for the brake boost. The gas trucks still use the vacuum boost system.

The hydro-boost system is used on the Super Dutys; 5.4L & 6.8L gasoline engines and on the 7.3L diesel. TSB 99-25-8 addresses all 1999 Super Duty F-Series with any of those engines.

TSB 99-25-8 only addresses the 1999 Super Dutys. Supposedly, only the '99 models got the contaminated fluid. That is, if Ford has a good handle on the scope of the problem.

Question

Autotech

How do you tell if you have hydroboost? I've heard from a few people the gas engines just have vacuum boost but the diesel f-250 and f-350's have the hydroboost system. I also think I read all the F-450's and F-550's have hydroboost. I have the 99 F-250 SD with the V-10 and it has a vacuum booster.

The best information I have, at this time, is that:
all Super Duty Diesels, Super Duty F-450 and F-550 with gasoline engines, have the hydroboost system.

Just check at the rear of your master cylinder; if the booster has got hydraulic lines going to the power steering pump, its a hydroboost.

I have a 2000 F250 4X4 crewcab V-10 Auto trans. I also have this problem with my truck. It's at the dealership with this problem. I drove a 2001 diesel just to see if it had this problem to, IT DID. Try driving your truck just enough to move the wheels, step on the brake pedal but don't let off on the pedal. Try turning the steering wheel to see if it locks up. As soon as you let off the brake pedal the steering returns...F-250's BEWARE/////////
If any one else has this problem let me know what you done to repair.

I have a 2000 F-250SD w/ V-10 and also have the problem...

Dealer Service manager first said it was due to steering geometry of SD and was "normal"... When I took the truck in for the trans cooler TSB the service writer said it was a Ford problem and there was no fix "yet"...

It's a giant "pain" when trying to back my 27' TT and I spend a fair amount of time in the Smoky's... Recently while trying to back out of a friends rather steep narrow driveway I almost went off the #$@!#$ side of the mountain because I couldn't turn the #$@%! steering wheel with the brake applied... It's a dangerous condition and it needs to be fixed!!! I filed a complaint (notice) with NHSTA via their online form... I urge others to do the same...

Best Regards,
Les

i have been asking around to local superduties owners, and so far all have had that problem. i have a V-10 with a plow on it and i thought maybee it was the weight of the plow doing it, but after removing the plow it still does it. i have over sized tires also but i dont think that is the problem either. i havent had any problems when i am rolling just at a dead stop it wont turn.....

Exclamation

Intersting, I've a 99 F250 SD V10 and just finished looking as 'autotech' suggested - and no lines - other than the two normal fliud lines going to the brakes. Maybe someone knows what configurations have hydroboost or not.

Hydroboost is on F250 & F350 Super Dutys with diesel engines (only), and F450 & F550 with diesel or gasoline engines. Its also on some motorhome chassis. The larger motorhomes have the hydromax system.
