Question New F250 SD making strange noises

My dad recently bought a new 2001 F250 Super Duty. It has the 5.4L, with automatic tranny. A few weeks back, after taking a short trip out of town (towing a 6,000lb travel trailer), the truck started making a strange noise. We're not exactly sure where its coming from. The sound could be described as a high pitched "whirring" sound, and changes pitch with engine RPM.

We took it back to the dealer, and they couldn't figure it out. All the mechanic did was hook some computer to the truck that showed the shifting points. A few days later, they called back and said that there were no bulletin from Ford describing anything like our truck is doing. The mechanic also said he talked to a Ford engineer and he said that he hadn't heard of anything like this, and to just keep tabs on it to see if it gets worse.

This is frustrating, to say the least. You'd think they'd be able to figure out whats going on, instead of just waiting until something breaks and then fixing it. Anybody got any ideas as to what this could be?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, the "wait 'til it breaks" mentality seems to be the most common. They don't give a rat's rump if you're stuck out on the highway.

Yup.....seems like the "service technicians" don't wanna turn a wrench unless its absolutely necessary.

There was a transmission recall on our '01 250 SD. We had that done now the new tranny is grinding going from D to OD. Taking it in Monday. Ford's plan: "if it ain't broke yet wait till your on the side of the road with a busted *** truck for the GM guys to laugh at".

Unhappy

about the only advice I can offer it to check out the gasser sections over on www.ford-diesel.com You should also check out the diesel sections because even though we've got different engines, we still have the same frame. Have you determined that the sound is engine related??? Or something else???

could be a vacume hose somewhere, our f250 makes a whirring noise that changes with rpm. We know what it is, jsut not which line it is. Truck still runs so we leave it alone.
