Post Ford Extended Service Plan for SuperDuty

I was wondering what the general feeling on the Extended Service Plans was?

I understand the determination between risk adversity and income, etc....

I am curious for those who own Super Duty trucks -- did you buy the FORD ESP?

Seems like a reasonable "option" to me and was wondering if I am missing something. I have a gasser, and think that in a few years I will be making the move to the PSD... but that could be 3-5 years down the road.

Do you think the ESP has some resale appeal?

Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Michael

IMHO, there is nothing better than any manufacturer's OWN esp. wheter it is ford's mopar's whoever's. that warranty must be honored at ANY dealer, whether you are home or in BFE, and it works like the normal warranty. We often have troubles getting things thru aftermarket companies, as they will find about any way to not pay the claim that they can, and often we sold the policy! Also, remember that for 5 years or 100k miles, your PSD is warranteed (engine only), in addition the the facory b2b 3/36k warranty.

I generally don't purchase extended warranties for my new vehicles..
There have been a few studies that show that problems with workmanship would appear prior to 36k miles.
It just seems to me like the extended warranties are just another way for dealerships to make more $$ with little service..

Thumbs down

I also don't have or plan to get an extended warrenty on my PSD. I've had them on prior vehicals and most of the time, never used them. Most problems seem to happen way before 36k. And the one time I did use an extended warrenty, the dealership didn't want to use it because my dad had done all of my oil changes. It became a real fight to get them to honor it.

Thanks for the responses. I've never bought an extended warranty myself... but this is also my first superduty.

I was even thinking about the appeal to a potential buyer -- the ability to tell someone the truck is still "under warranty" when selling it seemed like a good deal to me.

How long, on average, have you owned your trucks? And when do the problems, if any exist, manifest themselves?

Thanks!

Michael

89' Ford Ranger: owned it for 11 years and 190k miles and gave it to my dad who still drives it every day. Very few problems (fuel pressure regulator, u-joint bearing, water pump) all occured after 120k miles.

00' Superduty, 24k miles, no problems.
I plan to keep it at least another 9 years..

Make absolutely sure that the warranty is "transferrable" if you intend to use it as a resale feature. Many warranties are only good for the original owner.

If you can financially afford to pay for a repair the skip the warranty. My funds are tight so it made sense for me to buy a warranty. So far, I've needed an alt at $325 or so and my tach is broken. Who knows what that will run. My warranty cost $900 so I'm a 1/3 the way even. I've got 38,000 miles left to go.

The Ford ESP "warranty" is transferrable, or I can have the balance (steeply prorated, I'm sure) refunded to me if I sell the truck and the new owner doesn't want it.

I know that some family members buy the warranties and swear by them. For me, I've never bought one, but given that I plan to keep this truck for a few years (but not as many as a PSD)...

... well, I still don't have a clear idea about it. I've been quoted $1100 to $1600... and that would cover the truck for 5/75....

I'll keep pondering and post up which way I decide.

Thanks for all the advice and considerations!

Michael,

What did you ever decide about the ESP purchase? I am getting ready to purchase one for my Superduty, and thanks to Scooby, I located a good deal on it.

I didn't make any decision yet. I just crossed the 3k miles mark... so I'm still trying to figure out what my needs are, etc.
