V10 vs V8

My experience is the Supercab F250 with a 5.4L is comparitable to owning a F150 with the 4.6L and a Supercab F250 with V10 is comparable to a F150 with the 5.4L. They each have their own place. If I had a 4X4 in those I would go V10. And crew also go V10. Otherwise if towing 5K or less and not either of the two options metioned the V8 does a fine job and will get 15 MPG mixed driving and 19 unloaded trip consistently with the 3.73. A little less with the 4.10's. If you are like me and you only tow five or six times a year and your truck is your second vehicle you can put up with a little less ummph those times to get the gas mileage the other 95 - 99 percent of the time. But... hey... if you can afford it and you don't mind the increased maintanence cost then the Deisel is really nice.

I am interested in this too; we are deciding between a F250 XLT CREW 4X4 AUTO 156 V8 and the same configuration in a V10. Gas milege is an issue what is the diff v8 v. v10 on gas?? $ is about $600 more for the V10 - we tow a large tent trailer 3200 lbs and plan on adding a camper shell, etc to the bed. Any thoughts, opinions would be appreciated. We want powe - but don't want the milege to "kill us"....thnx

I like the 5.4L, but that's a lot of truck for the engine. Add the trailer, camper, & "stuff" and it'll probably be a little slower than you want. For your needs, I'd recommend the V10 w/3.73 gears. There is a small MPG penalty, but I think you'll be happier with the performance.
Perhaps others will give their personal experience- I'm just "shootin' from the hip"!

as nomo states, I think the V10 would serve you well. Once you start adding more stuff, towing etc, the 5.4L mpgs go down from optimum. In that configuration of truck, I bet the mpg difference would be 1 or 2 mpgs at most. Definately not a 'killer' in my opinion..
btw: If you were getting an SD like mine, then I feel the 5.4L is a better choice, but you have different needs than me..

You guys aren't getting that much worse mileage than the 4x4 SuperCrew F150's! I have the 5.4 SuperCrew 4x2 and only get 15-18, so size for size the SuperDuty's aren't bad at all! If the wife wasn't scared of the SuperDuty I would have jumped on one, but she's got 50% of the money and 100% of the sugar so we got the F150 LOL She said I can get a Big Poppa as soon as the F150 is paid for, time to double up on those payments! LOL

Most concur that V10s (Ford or D*dge) sound like 6-cylinders on steroids. But, "sounds" can be deceiving.

I would have to say that the V10 would be the way to go its right in the middle more power than the V8 and cost less than the PSD. Its just like the F150's most go with the 4.6 as its right in the middle its got more power than the 6 banger and you save some cash from the 5.4 cost. Now if everyone could afford it they would go with the PSD in the super duty trucks and the 5.4 in the F150 but thats not the way it is and you get what you can afford with the most power you can get.
