The first question I would ask is "What are you doing with the truck?" Are you towing anything? Do you have a long commute to work? If you're not going to be towing or hauling anything you may want to go with the V8 but if you're towing/hauling you'd probably want to go with the V10. I just went from a F150 5.4L to an F350 V10. I'm currently towing a 24' camper and putting a motorcycle in the back. In a couple years we may upgrade to a bigger camper and this truck will be able to grow with my needs. I also only work 11 miles from my house so 10mpg doesn't hurt that bad.
Good luck with your new truck.

Foreigner,
I happen to have a 5.4L F150, and a v10 F250. The V10 will definately have more "*****" and as a result will require more gas. I don't know what kind of gas mileage a 5.4L F250 would get, but my 2000 V10 gets anywhere from 10 to 14 depending on how I drive. I love the 5.4 in the F150, but I don't know if I would love it as much if I had it in the bigger truck. Good Luck deciding!

If you're getting an F-250 and plan to use it like and F-250, you don't want to go with anything less than a V-10. Personally, I'd recommend the PSD, but that's just my opinion. The V-10 has lots of power, but it's a gas hog. I get about 11 with my city driving and 14-14.5 on the highway. Go to www.Ford-Diesel.com in the Gas Engines section and ask the same question there.

Your basic question was which is better on gas (the V8) and which has more ***** (the V10) You decide which quality is more important to you. And if you decide you really want both great fuel milage and ***** then forget the V8 and the V10 and get the Powerstroke Diesel

I recently went through the same dilemma: v8 or v10.
(I really liked the PSD, but since I don't plan to own this truck long enough, it didn't make sense for me).
Since I don't tow much ('cept for maybe a pair of wave runners, or an occassional trailer -- things my ranger handled with ease), I ultimately opted for the v8 with a 4.10LS in the back.
After making the decision, I was really worried that I chose wrong.
Well, I picked up the truck on Saturday... on my way home, I have to travel up a 30-40% grade for about a 3 mile stretch at 65MPH.
I set the cruise (to keep my foot out of the equation) at 72 and held my breath...
To my pleasure, the needle held -- didn't even waiver. Then I checked the pedal to see if I had anything left. Sure did! I lightly tapped the pedal and was able to accelerate (up the hill).
After driving my first tank of gas, I've found the V8 with the 4.10 to have plenty of pep and it can handle it's own weight quite easily.
I do think that if I needed to tow more, I would opt for the V10 or the PSD...
I hope this helps.
Santa
PS: Mileage on the highway was mid 13 traveling about 72 MPH.

30-40% is a hulluva grade (3-4' up for every 10' forward)!
You've got quite a powerhouse there if you can keep that speed at that grade (sure wish I had a V10 in Nick).

The grade is probably closer to 30%... but you're right, it _is_ pretty intense.
It's a grade that my '97 Ranger 3.0L V6 5spd needed a downshift to be able to maintain -- but it couldn't accelerate up the "hill."
After I ordered the truck and realized that most people have gone with the V10, I actually agonized that my truck wouldn't be able to hold. It might have been an unrealistic expectation...
So, imagine my surprise when (1) the truck held and (2) it could even accelerate -- all on the 5.4L V8.
Since I don't tow much over 3000 lbs, I feel like I made the right choice...
Good luck with your purchase. I know I'm really enjoying mine. Now I just need to figure out what to add next...

I'm thinking of getting the V-8 w/the 4.10 axle ratio, 4x4, and 8800# GVWR package to pull a travel trailer that weighs 4800# dry.
Some are telling me to get the V-10, but if I can get away with the V-8, I will. We'll only be using the trailer locally (around Mich.) on weekend and one trip to NC this fall.
Otherwise, this will be my daily commute vehicle (11 mile to work & back)

Laura00,
If you are getting a Regular Cab, then the V-8 will be fine, If you go as heavy as a Super Cab with 4WD, then you may want to consider the V-10.
I own the V-10 in a 2WD Crew Cab and enjoy it, but I wanted (not needed) more kick, so I've added a Chip and Headers. My truck is a pleasure vehicle, and dosn't make have to do my 108 mile round trip commute.
Enjoy the truck!

Laura,
the 5.4L will work just fine for you..
Will it be as 'snappy' as the V10. nope.
Will it pull that light trailer easily.. yes.
Will it give you decent mpg's during your daily commutes? yes, better than the V10.
See my signature, I know I made the right choice every time I drive it.. over 20k miles on it now.
The trailer your pulling isn't really that much compared to what the Superduty's are capable of.. There are probably some configurations of F150's that could safely pull that, but I'd prefer the SuperDuty too.

Laura,
I have... see my sig..... The V-8 does fine. I got mine as a daily driver(10 miles to work)and weekend landscaping work horse. I drove a rented 350 dually PSD and it spoiled me. But the v-8 does me fine. I am getting 13's for mixed mileage and cannot complain too much for the size and weight of the thing. Let me know if you have any questions.
