I think it is more of a marketing thing. When I was looking in 2002. all they had were V-8's and PSD's, no V-10's, they had no short bed crew-cabs and all 4x4 were manual shifters not "shift on the fly."
When I asked the dealer what's up, he said that they only order the V-8's and the PSD's and no V-10's for inventory. The only V-10's are the one's that a customer would come in and order. He said they would rather sell a PSD for the extra 5K to a guy who was leaning towards a V-10 because a V-8 wasn't right for him. He said about 95% of the time they could talk them in to the PSD and away from the V-10, even though the V-10 would have been a better choice for that particular customer.
The people who get hurt are really the V-8 guys who would of gotten a V-10 for the extra $600, but weren't in stock and where the PSD doesn't make sense. Add my name to that list! I do under 8K a year, the V-10 would have been perfect! Next Truck I order the V-10 and wait the 6 weeks!

I talked to a salesman from Don Hinds about a month ago at the Indy Auto Show - he was suppose to check his inventory and do a 3 state search looking for a V10 250/350 in Toreador Red, and I've never heard back from him!

I own a 2004 V10 manual. Overall great truck and decent fuel mileage in the summer, 19mpg at best, towing 15mpg. In the winter more like 12mpg. A real joy for towing.
The only concern is how notchy the tranny is, espciially in cold Canadian weather this winter. Notchy enough that at times it hard to put into gears. The design of the ZF tranny with the oil pump and cooler keeps the oil probably too cool up here.
I read a few post and it seems that these ZF can be notchy.
