Post '97 F250 ?'s

looking to buy this truck to tow my '92 mustang 5.0 play car.
truck has:
351
heavy duty
auto w/ od on the shift lever
tranny cooler
XL trim package.

What is axle code 39?
Is the 351/auto gonna hold up towing a 3000lb car, tandum wheeled trailer, and gear?
What are problem areas on these rigs?
It is a local truck, so rust is nonexistant.

Thanks

Welcome to F150online!!
My husband drives an F350 97 with a V8 in it. It tows quite well the small heavy equipment he sometimes has to move. The truck is a gas hog but he's never had any problems with the engine (and he's let maintence slip quite a few times). He also has the XL trim, vinal seats and floor doesn't lend much for your comfort but it is easy to keep clean. Also the truck is louder inside and rides way ruffer than my F250, but for a work truck, it's OK. For what you're towing, the 97 should work out just fine. If you think you may be increasing the weights you're towing, then look into finding a Diesel.

hey thanks.
Does your husbands F350 have a 460, or the 351?
I have heard the auto tranny could be problematic.(sp?) Any idea what tranny this is?
You are right about the spartan interior, this one does have the upgraded(?) cloth bench with moulded headrests.
Is there a place I can go online to VIN decode?
Man, you have a serious rig!

As far as decoding the VIN try this site www.ford-diesel.com look around a bit and find the gasser sections. There should be a section for the 97 gasser engine too. I've tried asking my husband about what engine is in his truck. I know it's not the 5.4 and he says it's not the 351 but something more like 5.something. This is also the same guy that forgets to change the oil for almost 20k miles. It's amazing that the truck still runs but it does and it runs very well too. He's not had any problems with the transmission. I believe if you crawl under your truck and check out the axle that the gear size is stamped on it. Check out the diesel board, you should be able to find out something on the truck over there.
