I would strongly suggest you get the dualie, especially if you plan on towing on a regular basis. The powerstroke and transmission will be fine, and the F-250 would handle it, but stopping power would be much better with an F-350. The dualie would provide more stability, and would help elimiate vehicle and trailer swaying.

I have taken that into account already. Although, my wife is the one that will be driving it when we are not racing and also since I of course will be driving my 2001 Bolt. For her it is not an option to drive a big mammoth Dullie.

i would go with the F350 with the single rear wheel

i pull a 32' fifth wheel weighing in around 11,000 lbs with a F250 and i do not have any trouble

my dad pulls a 34' fifth wheel weighing in at 14,500 lbs with a F250 and he does not have any trouble either

with the F350 you have better suspension and bigger breaks, and considering the trailer is a gooseneck the swaying problem should not be that much

2001Bolt, I'll tell you from experience, there's no way a F-250 can haul 15,000# LEGAL and that's a big a$$ hauler your looking at.
I know, now and then I drive a F-450/F-550 and Class 7 Peterbuilt pulling a 40' Featherlite with goose neck and you'll be shocked how heavy of a load you can get in them. What make of car carrier are you looking at? open or enclose?.
If you want GOOD answers to your questions, go over to www.ford-diesel.com, pull up towing and hauling and give SmokeyWren a holler.
That boy know it ALL....
Good Luck

It is a Haulmark 42' Edge enclosed race car trailer. It is fairly light. It weighs 6480#'s with a capacity of 8520#'s (GVWR 15000#'s). The race car that I will be carring in it only weighs 1500#'s with me in it. That is why I think I can get away with an F250. What do you think?

Question

2001Bolt, there's 3 things you have to remember,(1) 42' enclosed trailer, even if your only hauling a 1500# race car, you will more than likely get an offer to haul some one or something else and BINGO your over the limit.
(2) your spending a lot of money here and a F-350 is only about $600-$800 more and your getting much more truck.
(3) I don't know where and how far your going to be hauling, but a lot of states, mostly east coast are getting tough on people hauling these big trailers with under rated horses (trucks) and the"ll weigh you and just think, it will be the time your hauling something heavy...Believe me, it will happen, and BIG $s on fines.
At least go the F-350 duallie.....

Question

Well here in Texas as long as I am not hauling for business and have "Not for Hire" I will not have to stop at the scales. Now as far as other states, I don't have a clue. By the way do you have any idea what the max limit is for an F250? an F350?

Question Towing Capacity???

I am thinking about purchasing a 2001 F250 Crew Cab with the Power Stroke and Auto Trans. I have a 42' Gooseneck inclosed race car trailer that has a GVWR of 15,000#'s. Will this truck pull this trailer with no problems or will I need a F350 Dullie???

Thanks

The big difference between a 250 and a 350 is the payload capability of the truck. In California trucks my F250 4X4 has a payload limit of 8800lbs and the F350 has a payload capability of 9700lbs. They both show the same towing capacity, however if you are towing a gooseneck, you will be putting more weight in the truck (over a travel trailer type setup). If I were in your situation, I would no doubt get the F350. It may ride a little stiffer on the street empty. I tow a 7000lb travel trailer with my F250 PSD, so it's an easy pull.

------------------
F150 is no more - 6/27/01 bought an 01 F250 SuperDuty 4X4, Powerstroke, auto, Lariet, Supercab with everything available. Added a Ford bedliner and bug deflector so far.

2001 bolt: like dogcam said, go over to the diesel site and talk with Smokey. I've met the man and he "REALLY" knows what he's talking about when it comes to how much truck you need to pull your trailer. A couple of things you'll need to know are what's the total weight of the trailer (with cargo) and what's the pin weight. With most 5th wheel (or gooseneck) setups, the F250 just can't handle it. It's not that they can't pull it, because they can. It's the heavy pin weight, squats it right down!! The only difference between the F250 and the F350 are the springs. The F350 can therefore handle more pin weight (or more cargo in the bed) because of these springs. The brakes are the same on both trucks!! Because of this, I'm able to "pull" a 30' travel trailer that weights over 10k but if I wanted to pull a 5th wheel, I think I could only handle about a 6k pound one. That's because of the difference of how the pin weight is distribuited in the travel trailer vs the 5th wheel. So the F250 is out for you. Check the diesel site www.ford-diesel.com they'll let you know if the F350 SRW is enough truck or if you'll need something heavyer. I don't know if you're looking at the long bed or short? I do know that most people that pull a 5th wheel setup, have to have a long bed because of the swing of the front of the trailer. They've been known to actually hit the rear glass in the truck. People with shortys will add a sliding hitch in their truck bed so they don't hit the trailer. As far as the ride difference between the F250 & F350, I test drove both and about the only difference I found was that a long bed was slightly better riding than a short bed. But no difference between the 250 & 350. I can totally agree with your wife about not wanting to drive a dually, those hips REALLY stick out there!! One thing I would suggest, if she can drive a stick, then get the manual. In my opinion, it's a much better choice for heavy towing than an automatic. You have Much better control over what the engine is doing. Especially when backing up or towing in mountains.

Short v. long bed - don't forget the gas tank! Shorty's have a 29 gal. Long bed's a 38 gal I believe! I agree with Tina F250 v F350 ride is min. difference - long bed is a bit smoother. Ford-Diesel.com is your best source of info. on this one.
Best of Luck
