Mileage Threshold

Hey guys, my question is this... Im getting rid of my 150 soon, and want to go with a diesel powered 250, and am curious about how many miles on average that it should last with preventative maintenance and such. Plus, any suggestions where i can get a good deal on one in the Houston area would be helpful...

it depends on what your going to be doing with it. Will you be towing with it on a regular basis or just every once on a while or no towing at all? You can get 200k easily out of one if you take care of it.

diesels are the way to go...but the cost of fuel...ahhhhh i love mine..i get 12.7 in a duallie dump 4x4 around town...loaded or not...i would suspect better mileage from a pickup...get a plow also if you live in snow areas...make $$$$$$ with little effort on the drivetrain...pay for itself in no time...i have my oil changed every 3500-4000 miles..(almost 4 gal per change) so if you did not know...oil is not cheap....but well worth it....and if you get a diesel ..use "diesel 9-11" in the winter as an anti gel..i learned the hard way...zap!

well, since i live in houston, snow is not a problem, and i wont be towing at all, the worst i may do is move furniture... the majority of the driving that i do is fairly short distance, between 10-25 miles one way.. relatively short trips...

jason,

I want to ask you the same question I asked in another thread.

Why do you want to make such a big jump? Why not just get an 06 F150 SuperCrew, suppose to have the 6.5 bed?

I went through this thought process about a year ago. Now, Half my time I am saying should have gotten the 250 and the other half I am pleased that I didn't (Gas prices).

Just wondering what is driving you towards the 250.

I could have used a 250 a couple weeks ago when I cleared out a lot I own. Though my 150 did a great job, I just think I could have hauled more and made less trips.

short trips on a diesel are not good for it. a gasser may be better for your needs. the f250 with the 6.8 is a good truck. I do plan on getting a f250, hopefully with the new 6.4 in late 2006.

Short trips arn't "good" for any engine, but diesel's like to be wound out for a little bit more than gassers tend to do. Just get it on the highway once a week to let it get goin good. Having a F150 and a F250 at the same time I can easily say that the F250 is a LOT more truck, but I feel that is a good thing. If you don't even tow with it (you never know though) that truck will go 250000+ with normal oil change/ service. And do it when a lighter truck will be rattling to pieces. A V10 will also work well for you if you get a deal.

I'm getting 12.5 to 13.5 mpg unloaded and 10.5-11.5 towing 6k pounds. I don't tow that much weight or that often or I may have gotten the 6.0.
The V10 will get the same milage as the 5.4 so get the extra tq and hp if you go gas.
