6.0L Vs. 7.3L Diesel Engines
I realize this is an age-old question, but a search yielded no results. What are the differences in the engines, pro's & con's of each one. If I do decide to get an F250 I will be lifting it pretty high and I want the best mileage I can get. I can't find 6.0 liters on ebay (but I haven't really been looking for one), I am guessing they are much rarer than the latter 7.3L.
Thanks guys.

The 7.3 has been around long enough to get all the bugs worked out of it. The 6.0 liters can get a little sketchy with programmers and big power mods, 7.3s aren't as sensitive. Stock for stock, a 6.0 liter will run away from a 7.3; but the 6.0 is also pushed harder from the factory (less displacement than the 7.3, yet making over 100 more horsepower). Some 6.0 liters have head gasket/head bolt problems. Some run just fine. IMO, if it's a truck you're gonna push hard with power mods, find a 7.3

Well the 7.3L has come along in a few forms from 87 to early 03, so they are VERY solid motors that are torque monsters, and can be built to do just about anything.
The 6.0 being a newcomer in 03 had some teething problems, but they are good as well. Different animal all together, all the ones I have drivin seem more like real strong gas motors with more top end/ less bottom end than the 7.3 does.
For 07, there will be a bored out 6.0 to 6.4L with twin turbos.

You can't find them on ebay???? At least 1/3 of the F250s I see on there are 6.0L. They are in no way rare since the 7.3L has not been made since early 03. Also since then the diesel craze has really taken off so the 6.0L is getting pumped out about as fast as they can make them.
The 6.0L in 03 and early 04 were having some problems and most have been worked out, but not all. As for the coolant puking in stock form thats typically not a problem. What is believed to be happening is that when running a hot chip the coolant is getting flash boiled from the high temps. There are a couple fixed that are supposed to help alieviate this problem that I think have some merit. Time will tell though. I'll take my 7.3L over the 6.0L anyday.

And therein lies my problem, I've been searching for 1998-2003 F250's, and they started making the 6.0L in 2003, not the 7.3L. Also, the 6.0L is a gas engine? Is it a V8 or 10? I know there is a 6.8L V10 available but a 6.0L as well? What is the displacement in cubic inches on that.
Out of a 2002 Lariat Supercrew F250 7.3L and a 2004 Lariat Supercrew 5.4L (3v), who would win stock, I am really looking for the 0-60 times as well as 1/4 mile times. Thanks. This is the best I can find (13.5 1/4 mile, no 0-60).
I also found this F350 running 12's...wtf, and all he has is an intercooler. (6200# 550rwhp on diesel 680rwhp NOS)
Thanks.

Yes the 6.0 is a turbo diesel. Specifically an International VT 365. Here internationals specs for it. Just like with the 7.3L PS, (an international T444e) Ford takes and reprograms the engine with it's own programming, and just bolts it into the truck.
http://www.internationaldelivers.com...t365detail.asp
Go to www.dieselinnovations.com to see some real fast diesels.
PS, I know i would spank ya with my truck. Even a 4.6L with a five speed would beat it. (ask how I know)

LMAO, I don't think so. He lists an intercooler, but every PSD since 99 has had intercoolers. Trust me Dave is FAR FAR FAR from stock. He's one of the owners of Swamps Diesel Performance. They built his truck about as big as they could and was one of the highest hp PSDs in the country a few months ago. I haven't heard much from them lately, but I seem to remember a mention of that engine throwing a rod. bbunting or Zane from WOP are holding the high hp honors right now. Brian is at 600+ hp and 1300+ lb/ft to the ground. I think the dyno he was on maxed out when he was running. Zanes truck nobody outside a small group really knows what its doing right now. They haven't realeased anything yet as I guess they want to make sure the runs weren't flukes. Unofficial results were 10.87 sec 1/4mi and 700-800 rwhp. Now keep in mind thats rumors that have floated around, but it appears they have a functioning twin turbo setup on it.

I've done it, although it was a running start on the street but the GT had a jump on me. He ended up behind me and pissed pretty quick, and in a cloud of black smoke.
Check the goofy show on Speed called Truck Universe. The did a show (about 2 weeks ago on a Saturday then re-aired on Wednesday, not sure about future shows) on SCT and used Eric at Innovative's 2 WD F250 Crew Cab against a new Mustang GT. In 100* temps, the F250 smoked the Mustang in every run. They made several runs but only showed 2 or 3. Times from low 14's to a best of high 13's. Every race the F250 won. The tune they used was Innovatives Extreme Street tune.
Keep in mind, it was a 2 WD so they couldn't even spool up the turbo as you can do with a 4x4 and launch in 4-HI. They launched from idle. If they would have spooled it up, they would never have gotten traction.
You'd be very surprised.

I'm reviving my own thread, sue me.
I recently met a local girl in her twenty's with a beautiful 2005 (I believe) F250 (looks like a lariat, but it was dark), Supercab/Extended Cab 4x4. I would like to know if a stock 2000 F250 Crew Cab with a 7.3L would smoke her 6.0L. Anything she has on top of a '00 F250? Anything the '00 F250 has on her?
What about weight differences between the 2 trucks, anybody have any links to somewhere with these details? Thanks.
Lastly, how much of an improvement in torque and horsepower (looking for rough numbers) will she gain with a chip, same with the 7.3L. And will the 6.8 V10 smoke (unloaded) a 6.0 or 7.3?
I think I am purchasing this truck, a 2001 F-250 7.3L 4x4 Platinum Edition (love the interior) crew cab. Anybody have anything to say about this purchase or any advice?
If I do get this truck, I will run against the 6.0 to confirm whatever remarks are made about who will win or lose, and list the mods each of us have at the time. Adrienspeeder, have the answer to these questions bud?

Never heard of the Platinum Edition, musta been a custom job.
The 7.3L will have more grunt off the line, but the 6.0 wins up in the higher RPMs. The torqueshift also has the advantage over the 4R100 with one more gear to tighten the powerband.
Chips on both sides can make them both equally way faster than stock.
Did you go to the gallery on www.dieselinnovations.com so see what a diesel can do?
