Will 2005+ Wheels Fit My Pre-2005 F250 4wd SD?

Hi all - I just bought a 2003 SD PS KR SCrew (how's that for abbreviations?) It has the 16" wheel and tire package and I would like to upgrade to a set of the newer 18" or 20" OEM wheels and tires. From browsing eBay, it seems that the newer SD trucks require a wheel with a different offset that unfortunately, will not fit onto a pre-2005 truck. Is this a fact? Are there any alternate measures available, for example, spacers, that would allow the use of these handsome wheels? Or am I simply just going to have to go to the aftermarket? I searched the forums and didn't get any good results, so I apologize if this topic has been beat to death! Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer me.

Mike

Wheel swap

I just put a set of the 18" OEM 5 spoke wheels on my Father's 02 F250 SD. He had 16" steel wheels with the chrome cover with multiple holes around the outer ring. The only issue was, at full turn, where the power steering begins to make that slight whinning sound, the inside of the tire slightly touched the sway bar. A slightly smaller tire would probably resolve this issue all together, but my Father worked for Ford as a Master Mechanic for almost 20 years, and said it wouldn't really cause him any issue, as the only time this should matter, would be when backing a trailer or turning into a tight spot.

You can go back, just not the reverse of older rims on the new trucks.

Also, screw is a baby truck term, you have a crew cab.

Thanks all. My neighbor just bought an '06 F350 SuperCab Lariat 4wd and it has the 18" setup. I will see if he'll trade a Zaino detail job for letting me try on his wheels for a day

Sorry, Adrianspeeder...new here. Still figuring out all the unique codes and signs. I guess it's safe to say I HAD a SCrew ('04 F150) and now I own a CrewCab ('03 F250). Thanks for the heads-up.

If I can make that trip, can I bring a few extra SuperDutys and a couple extra Brute Force Kawis? (I think we'd likely be most interested in coming just for the day.) I tried to PM you but I can't use PM functions for 90 days since I'm new. If you get a chance, drop me an email to "e6453@hotmail.com" and we can talk more. I'm interested. Thanks!

Caution

I was considering putting 05 King Ranch wheels on my 03 King Ranch. I was told that the rims are not interchangable, but am not sure why.

I posed this same question to an eBay seller and he responded with this:

"Good question, I know that the adaptor needed is a spacer for the 2 inch offset but a regular 2 inch spacer itself won't work. A 2 inch spacer is too big, so they make an adaptor/spacer. Some people are selling them here on ebay in pairs for arround 100 bucks. Since they are selling them in two's I don't know if they are needed for both front and back. I know they are needed for the front. They are needed for both truck and suv applications."

I will plan to test fit my neighbor's 18" wheels and tires this weekend and settle it once and for all.

Here's what I found: The new (2005+) wheels will fit the bolt pattern of the pre-2005 trucks, BUT, the offset is all wrong. The 2005+ wheels have an approximate 6" distance from the hub to the back side of the wheel, while the pre-2005 wheels have a roughly 4" distance, i.e. the wheels sit in about 2" more than the OEM wheels sit. A set of 1.5" to 2" wheel spacers would resolve the issue, I'm sure, and this is what I plan to do.

R - Not 100% sure, but my neighbor's 06 V10 F350 has a totally different front end on it - a coil spring suspended front axle while my '03 PSD F250 has a leaf spring front axle. I didn't compare the rear axles, but based on the offsets, would conclude they are correspondingly wider as well.

Bottom line - If you buy wheels from a 2005+ SuperDuty 4wd for a pre-2005 SuperDuty 4wd, you will need to have the spacers (1.5" to 2" will do it, 2" would probably be best since the difference is about 1.75") and you should also be sure to get all the centers as well, since they are also different. They extend about 1.75" further out than the pre-2005 centers and have a chrome cylindrical inner surface that runs back to the hub surface which finishes it up nicely.

I plan to upgrade wheels at some point fairly soon. I'll keep everyone posted.

FYI - Rim size 2005 Super Duty

I wanted to use a set of 16" rims off a 2005 FORD EXCUSION on my 2005 F250 SD, but no go. The new 05 (and up) Super Duty uses a larger disk brake, about 1/2 larger that what is still used on the Excusion right now. So 17" is the smallest rim one can use on 05 and newer Super Duty.

Here's a couple of pics of my 99 with 05 18"wheels

The fronts do rub on the leafs slightly at full lock. I suppose a spacer would work but wheels spacers kinda scare me...
