F250 6.0 What is that Fan noise during steep hill climbs

I just gat back from pulling my camper from Ohio to Virgina Beach Rt 77 to Rt 64. I notcied that during the large extended hill climb's there is a Fan noise coming on just for a about 30 to 60 seconds, but the noise increases as the turbo PSI increases, Is this the turbo intercooler ?

I had the same thing happen on my '06 diesel after towing a 27' travel trailer. I think it's a feature that engages the fan clutch at higher RPM's to allow for increased cooling for short bursts of time when the engine and/or tranny are under an increased load. Either that, or something's broken with both or our fans. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the turbo, I've heard the same noise in as '03 F150 I had before this one when I was towing a trailer with that.

It is normal. The fan, when engaged, ensures adequate cooling for the engine and other components. Mine just got a workout while driving from East Lansing, MI to Savannah, GA after picking up my new 12,000lb fifth-wheel.

Mine comes on even in stop and go traffic....its 94-97 here in DFW right now so it gets hot. It only spins until the speed picks up and the cooling system gets enough air.

Not to worry, your chit ain't broke.

Ditto RollingRock.

The fan fully engages based on a few things including engine temp and tranny temp, which aren't very common so usually, it's rare to hear it engage.

And the intercooler doesn't make any sound. It's like a radiator that cools the charge air.

sevans8651,

Is it a high pitch squeal? I get a high pitch squeal on mine while climbing a steep grade. my truck is a 06 psd. I was told by another 06 psd owner that they had ford replace the clutch on the engine fan and the noise is gone. Think I am going to have the same done.
