Looking for bigger truck
Been looking to either trade in my 07 F-150 XLT for a F-250, don't want to but we want a bigger camper. I would like an 08, but don't know if we want the payments. Other option is to trade in wifes 98 Camry and get an older truck. My question is this...what years do I really want to stay away from between 2000 and present. Another question would be price wise, what would be a good range for a decent truck with lower miles...I would really like a diesel for the extra towing power/better fuel econ over the V10 gasser. Any opinions would be appreciated to get a better feel for what to look for. I have found a few in the area and hard pressed to find on the local lots with under 150k on em and they still want around $15K for a 2001...

I'd stay away from the early 6L's (like 03-04), SOME were very problematic. All reports I have seen on 08 6.4L diesels aren't much better than a V10 for fuel economy, if any, but otherwise seem much improved. Then there are those who swear by the old 7.3L's of which I personally had more problems with than my current 6L.
Honestly there is no magic year to buy or not buy, I know guys that have 03 6L's that have hardly ever been in the shop. The best thing I could recommend is to get the repair history on whatever vehicle you are interested in before buying.

If it's a 2003 or a 2004 with a 6.0, RUN away. Don't walk. If its a 2003 7.3 King Ranch (ultra rare), then buy it and never let it go. Other than that, any 7.3 will run forever. V-10s are also a good motor, but thirsty. Don't get a 5.4 V-8, or you'll hate life, especially if you're towing.

can't tell you what not to buy, but can tell you my new F250 6.4L, so far average 14-15 locale and 20 plus at 65 on highway. try to keep it under 10psi when taking off from a light or stop sign. completly stock. no aftermarket kits. just to give you an idea of what some will do if you have a light foot. haven't pulled my travel trailer with it let but that is coming soon. I'm very happy with it.
