Vehicle Operating Temperatures
Now that I have an Edge Evolution which can provide all sorts of interesting information I'm curious as to how to interpret the various operating temperatures. For instance, what are the optimum operating temps for the engine, engine oil, transmission fluid, EGT, etc. and at what point should I become concerned with a specific temperature. In other words, what are the highs; the lows and the best operating temperatures for the key components of my 2005 F-250 when normally running and when towing my 9500lb. trailer? Thank you in advance for your wisdom!

Optimal engine temps for a gas motor is around 220 degrees F. I used to drag race in Texas (Hallsville - 89~92) and alot of guys liked 195 degrees to help keep air as dense as possible - always cooling down between stages. For a daily driver - 200~220 degrees F is good IMO.
Other folks can comment on specific temps for trans, rear diff, coolant, oil, exhaust, etc....and diesel applications.

Coolant temp should be about 190* nominal. The trans temp will depend on what kind of driving you're doing and what the conditions are at the time. If you're driving at low speeds with the TC unlocked it'll get hot. If you're driving around in hot humid days then your heat rejection isn't going to be so good so it'll run hotter. Good rule of thumb is 80-100* over ambient. EGTs should be 1250* preturbo or less for a sustained period.
