Ive been told by my local tranny shop that the factory Torque Converter is the weak spot in my 4R100. Ive heard bad stories about both auto and Manual

I personally wish i had a manual over my auto. It depends on how much u want to tow.

If you plan on doing alot of heavy towing, ya shouldnt leave the tranny stock, so, it wont really matter if its a manual or auto either tranny needs money invested in it to help it hold up to day in and day out of towing, btw my tranny gave way at 105K. good luck

The 05+ Torqueshift hasn't had any bad reports from what I read hear and there...anyone wish to chime in, I'd sure like to know too.

I've got a 05 F-250,screw,auto,Fx4,lariat, and have 108,500 on mine and so far so good. The most I pull is around 11,000# (DeereCT322 & trailer) I just coundn't see pulling that with a F1. But if it does go out I plan on rebuilding it back a little stronger. I might even try going another route with a different tranny. Or even a newer or different truck.. As far as the 6.0 goes just try to stay with the 05 and up and keep it simple with mods(intake and exhaust, maybe a lite programmer) if there is such a thing. And just keep it serviced. Its amazing what a little maintance will do!

As mentioned, the 05+ torqueshift is a better trans than the stock 4R100. That being said, Brian's Truck Shop (BTS) builds the worlds greatest 4R100 auto. He is in Arkansas and has Superduty owners from the entire country coming to him for trans work. All he does, day in and day out is 4R100 transmissions. He is the best there is, and his customer service backs his product as well. Once mine goes, I will have one of his built transmissions. My father has a ZF 6-speed in his and I still would rather have a standard, but they are hard to find. 4R100s aren't great (stock), but whatever garbage Dodge uses is worse!

the 4r100 was an alright tranny for just driving but towing it wasnt the best but the new torqueshift is a good tranny so far as long as you flush it with mercon 5. the 6.0 powerstroke seems to be good to everyone i know that drives the crap out of them. the ones that are driven easy are the ones that have issues for some reason. some of the first 2 years of the 6.0 had a 6 speed torqueshift tranny but then they stopped making them.

I also heard of complaints about its automatic transmission problems, especially when moving or towing large loads in extremely/extended hard-working situations. Aside from this, other Ford F250 parts that are said to have a bit of a problem are the sliding rear glass that sometimes don't latch shut, the turning radius, and the engine is impossible to service without the use of a stepladder.

I'd say go with a standard shift...

It's shifting the standard of the automotive industry...

Or, in the case of the 08, removing the cab from the truck!

Just buy a Dodge truck and you won't have any problems that the Ford owners have.

No!

The '03+ 5R110 "torqshift" uses Mercon SP, not Mercon V. Also all, not just the first two, have six forward gears, but two are so close and always one isn't used out of the 1 through 5 shifts depending on temperature.

Exactly...here's the explanation:

TorqShift Transmission:

The 5R110W, or TorqShift, automatic transmission is a redesign of the E40D/4R100. Basically, the gear ratio for first gear was lowered from 2.71 : 1 to 3.09 : 1. To get second gear the overdrive clutch is engaged to give a ratio of 2.2 : 1. Third gear is now the same ratio as the old second gear, 1.54 : 1. The TorqShift is advertised as being a 5 speed automatic, when actually it has six forward speeds. On cold engine operation (below 0 degrees) the overdrive clutch is engaged in third gear for a ratio of 1.09 : 1. The transmission will shift directly to sixth from fourth and fifth is skipped. On a warm engine the shift pattern would be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th (direct drive), 6th.
So second gear is really first gear plus the overdrive gear. Fourth gear is really third gear plus the overdrive gear. Sixth gear is really fifth gear plus the overdrive gear. It's really a three speed transmission with each gear also being used in tandem with the overdrive gear to create three more speeds.

Yeah, your engine will be there while the rest of the truck falls apart

So there are six gears, but the truck will only shift consecutively through 5 of the 6, depending on conditions?
