Angry Almost lost!

So last night my buddys starts runnin his mouth that his chevy silverado can pull my f250 across the parkin lot. I have a stock 6.0 diesel. He has the 5.4 gas, with full exhaust no cats, computer programmer and intake. So i lock my hubs and he put his into 4wd.So we go he pulls me like 3ft then i hold him and he just starts meltin tires. Lets go agian.... Ready set go! this time i was in 1st on the auto tranny he go's no where i pull him like a foot and then he melts rubber! Wtf i didnt really win! Both runs i never was able to get over 1200rpm's. Think if i could get my turbo to spoil quicker i could pull his @ss across the parkin lot?

P.s- we shreded a 15,000lb towing strap in the process

?? you should have been able to pull him. Some other factors though. Does he have a real steep gear ratio? Did have extra weight in the bed? Did he have bigger tires? Anyone have a lift kit?...just alot of variables so it's hard to figure out why you feel you lost. If he started spinning tires I would think you could have taken him then...I don't know

Maybe other folks will chime...

Tires make a big difference...I've always heard that you should wait until the other guy starts spinning his tires, then start pulling.

I don't wanna know what that did to your truck... good way to kill a tranny.

Anyhow, I have a feeling he had better tires...

Also... if you had a stick, and used L gear you'd be golden...

But that 1,200 rpm issue... interesting ain't it?

What's happening is your torque converter is locked up and trying to give all it's power out to the wheels... under extreme load, it will do this. If you want to see this again, just hold down your brakes hard with your left foot, and get your right and floor the truck while the tranny is in D... you will get the same effect. But it's also a good way to burn up the trans fluid.

The 'liquid courage' should have helped you pull the guy even more! Now I'm really confused on how you could have lost!!!

umm since when cant you hold an auto in 1st(or L gear as you call it) which he did say he did......

did you spool the turbo? (hold the brake with the left foot and apply just enough gass to get the psi up without spinning the tires)

Can't happen... The trans won't fully lock in 1st gear unless you have done the Torque Converter Lockup mod...

Hmm... interesting... someone told me different. Interesting.

Not saying you are wrong.. heck, I'd believe you over another person that told me.

Well, whatever... glad I don't own an automatic.

In a "pull off" it dosent matter what you have for power, weight will win everytime. If I have a 4 cylinder chevy luv that weighs 12,000, it'll pull your stroker around like its a toy. Its all in getting traction to the ground

I guess that's why 20 ton tractors work so well with a 150 hp engine.
