super chips

I have a 99 SD with a 6.8L I want to use my super chip on it. has any one had problems with there trucks after using the chip? im afraid to use it on my new truck because my 97 f150 blew its head gaskets after I chiped it. I dont know for sure that it was the chip that caused it or not.

I had a Superchips on my F-150 and I thought it sucked. My Edge Evo blew it out of the water.

Historically, Superchips tuners are pretty mild as far as tuners go. The reason some people don't like them is because they don't add as much power as some of the other more aggressive tuners. I personally like the Superchips tuners a lot. I have one for my 08, although I have not tuned my truck with it yet. I am waiting to make sure that I do not have any issues with the truck before tuning it. I always wait at least 5,000 miles before tuning a new vehicle.

My truck has 130000 miles on it and I was going to put the 87 oct setting on it my 97 had the 91 or higher setting. I just dont want anything to happen to my new truck because of the programmer.

Nothing will happen... I first installed the Superchips on my F-150 around 100,000 miles. It came off shortly after and an Edge Evo was installed. I never took it off of level 3, running bumped up timing. Sold the truck with 125K on it. It is now regularly getting the **** ran out of it, still on level 3, going strong.

I would not tow with any performance setting. Ford builds their trucks slightly detuned so that you don't tear up things like the transmission. It is common for the engine to decrease power just before shifts so that when towing, you do not damage the transmission. A performance tune will actually disable that feature and the truck will try to shift much more aggressively than it does without the tune. You should only use a TOW tune or the stock tune for towing.

I think the 87 is the do everything setting if there isn't a TOW tune loaded on the chip. Having said that, I towed my boat in level 3 everywhere with the F-150. I've towed my boat in every setting on the F-250 too (1-5) without any problems.

You can probably do like Zaairman said and tow that small trailer with any of the three tunes. If towing anything more substantial, I would recommend using the Tow tune or Stock tune.
