Hey,

Ive got a 2008 F250 4x4 with 3.73 gears and 5.4L V8...

Im getting around 13 mpg STEADY and 15-16 if I drive VERY carefully.... meaning low rpm shifts and using the cruise control to speed up...lol...a slow process but it does the trick... lol.

Also, Ive found if you can go downhill all the time it really helps!! lol...

I am also burning ****ty indian reservation gas in my truck... tax free so its CHEAP. (like $2.87/gal vs $3.20/gal...) but its poor quality gas as well...

My truck IS manual transmission so Im thinking that may help a bit too.

Ive got around 4,000 miles on it now and mpg did improve since it was new.

This is ofcourse unloaded and no towing...

But, I thought Id give you a little bit of hope... AND dont listen to ANYONE about the 5.4L being too small... cuz I KNOW its not. I've put 2,400 lbs of coal in the bed and I didnt even know it was there at all - no loss in power... and I only have 3.73 gears. This motor gets good mpg and has good power, I love the 5.4L 3v V8, Im SO GLAD I didnt get a V10 and waste gas.... I drive 70+ miles per day and it helps the ol' wallet out quite a bit having the 5.4 getting 13+mpg constantly..... given, going up steep hills, etc. Im gearing down a lot more than I would with a V10 but I can tolerate losing 1mph going up a hill to save gas in the long run.... I think you know what I mean...

I drove the same truck but with an auto tranny, and it didnt seem to have all the power mine does so I know its not apples to apples 100%, BUT your mpg WILL increase a little bit after you put some miles on it...hang in there!!

Wow, gas is expensive there. I paid $2.75 a gallon to fill my wife's car yesterday...and the average here in Nashville for regular unleaded is about $2.85 a gallon.

Sucks.. but it's life.

He is using the truck for land scaping?? I always see the older all white 4 door XL's for cheep,Get a used diesel i have a "03" with auto tranny and the 6.0l and drive mainly highway to work and i keep goin between 17 and 18 mpg...im happy! yea gas is expensive there... Here in MD its 2.79gal at mobile and other known stations.... I know cause i watch the gas people look at me and laugh as i pump 3.29 a gal for diesel in my tank....lol

The 5.4 really isnt a bad engine guys, My dads last truck(an '03 f-250) had the 5.4 in it and it was a hoss. No it's nowhere near as powerful as his '07 with the 6.0 but it got the job done. It lasted a VERY tough 100K before it just finally gave up lol, it was a farm truck so it was used hard almost every day. But as far as gaining some MPG, the cost of the mods isn't worth what you would gain. Heavy truck + small engine= bad MPG and there is no way to get around it.

My 5.4L in my SD is way more motor than people make it out to be. I haul all kinds of stuff with mine(bobcats, tractors) and my mpg always stays within 11-13, Towing or not. I've got a 8.2L Turbo Detroit to do my heavy hauling and it gets 12.5mpg.

I'd love to stuff one of those 8.2l Turbo Detriot Diesels in a F350...

I saw an article about someone throwing one in a Ram3500 in the 8 Lug Diesel magazine...

Most people don't like them and say they are a crappy motor, But mine is completely rebuilt and the injectors are all set perfect and mine runs like a dream with plenty of power.
