clutch pedal/ master cylinder

i have a 99 f250 s/d 4x4 w/ a 6 spd manual trans. a while back, i'm driving with my son in law and the clutch pedal comes up and slaps the dash! not good! so i look under the dash and the rod that goes into the firewall is broken loose from the firewall. i check with the local dealer and they say i need to replace the master cyl because the rod to the clutch pedal is part of the master cyl so all of it must be bought as one piece. then they say i might as well do the slave cyl as well. labor for this is $500.00 plus parts! does anybody know of a way to fix this myself?can i just fix the rod from the pedal to the firewall? or am i stuck with replacing the whole shebang? any help will be greatly appreciated!
