99 f250 LD questions

Hey everyone I just purchased a 99 f250 light duty truck. 5.4 2x4 auto trans

can someone give me some specs on this truck. I did some searches and I saw people post weights ranging from 6600 - 7100 lbs. This truck doesnt look any different than the 2002 f150 which I drove in to go see it. So I cant see it weighing 6600 lbs. The tag said the gvr was something like 6900 lbs. So how can the bare truck weigh 6900 ???? isnt the gvr supposed to be the max weight of the truck after being loaded????I did the VIN conversion online and it said the gvr should be 6001-7000 lbs

also do you know what the tow rating of the truck would be. Yeah I know I need the axle code but I cant get to the truck just this second. if you could give me a range that would be great. I bought this truck to pull my boat so dont need a whole lot.

Also is there any frame difference in this truck as compaired to a regular f150. I understand the axles and springs etc are beefed up but how about the frame. I could not see any difference however I may not be able to tell by a first glance.

last question? The engine in this truck is shot. Someone put water in the radiator after the heater core leaked it out and over the winter the block cracked. It does run but the oil is a milkshake. What year engines can I choose from to go back in this truck. I keep hearing about certain year 5.4s being better than others. However I also hear that only certain years will work with the computer which is in the truck now. An ideas

anyway I only gave $950 for the truck. Its a pretty basic truck with no power options but a rust and wreck free body. I figure I can drop in a junk yard engine and use it to tow my boat.

My '99 F150 reg cab short bed weighs 4200 lbs.
I don't imagine your F250 LD could weigh more than 4800 lbs.

In 1999 Ford introduced the 'improved' 5.4L the hp went from 235 to 260.
However, according to the literature, the new 5.4L only went into the F150.

The F250 LD and the F250 SD that had the 5.4L, got the old 235hp motor in 1999.
That may be what the "computer talk" is about.

As for towing, axle ratios you either have

3.31 = 7,900 lbs towing (gcwr 12,700 lbs)
3.73 = 8,700 lbs towing (gcwr 13,500 lbs)

Which is way more than I'd hook up to an old truck.

Oh yeah, the F250 LD is pretty rare, I've only seen a couple of them.

And Ford literature was printed for the F-150 and the F-250 (and up) SD.
While the F-250 LD specs are listed in F-150 documentation.

hey thanks for the response. It looks like this truck will work perfect for me. I have been pulling my boat which is around 6000 lbs with my 2002 v6 f150. It does the job but the poor v6 doesnt like it. So I wanted to find something not too big but not too small. Looks like this is just about right.

Since this truck needs a new motor does anyone know what years will work.

I would love to get one of the more powerful 260hp versions they used in the f150's but i have heard they wont work with this model. Heck I would love to get one alot newer but I hear that there are computer issues.

any thoughts before I go engine hunting.......

thanks

Anything will work, it just depends how much time and money you want to put into it. Hell, there is even a member on this site who has a V-10 in his F-150.
I don't see why any 5.4 from 2003 and older wouldn't work, but then again I'm no expert. Try making a post up in the engine section.

well i defiantly dont want to spend alot of $$ or have a big PITA. I just want to get the most bang for the buck and make sure I get something that will be a basic bolt in swap....

if there happens to be a better year or model to search for I would like to snag up one of thoes. If not one of the same models will due.

thanks

i think 99 the 5.4s got the p.i heads that make the 260 hp. those shouldnt be to hard to find.make sure its a 2 valve motor.
