Cool The ultimate test drive

Dont you wish that you would be able to give a truck you are looking a really good run with some towing and work that you might be doing in the future? Well I got that change this weekend. I posted in a previous thread that I was looking at a used Superduty and I couldnt get the numbers to come out right to buy the truck. I am really glad it didnt happen now. The dealer is a family friend and I had to tow a John Deere 317 skidsteer this weekend with attachements to do some work around the in-laws property after a storm. The combined vehicle weight was a little north of 14k and the truck that I was using was a 2003 F250 Superduty with a V10 4X4. The overall experience was great the truck pulled really well lots of power and never lost much speed going up hills. The only thing is I put 211 miles on the truck total this weekend and just estimating the milage I would have to say that it would be somewhere in the single digits(around 6 to 7 MPG). I started the trip with a full tank and used about 7/8's of a tank. I had the cruise set at 55 the entire time when I had the trailer on it and the OD off with a very slight head wind on Saturday. This trip made the decision to get a diesel all the more easier with fuel milage that I got with the V10.

Too bad - maybe it's because mine is a 3V, but I get about 8 city and 11 mpg towing that kind of weight around - at least going from Chicago to Holland, MI.

Anyway - enjoy the diesel...

We had a 2001 250 v10 Lariat plow truck at work up until 05. It got around 10 mpg IN THE SUMMER!!!!. During the winter weather I was plowing or not, I got around 8 mpg. It was a bbbbaaaaaaddddddd boy though!

why would you drive with the od off the entire time?

you did nothing but waste fuel and worked the truck harder

I was towing a skidsteer and attachments that weighed about 8500# behind the truck and there were rolling hills the entire way and I didnt want to fry a transmision on a truck I didnt own.

Between #8500, head winds and rolling hills you would be stupid to keep it in overdrive my friend. By locking and unlocking the TC you are heating the tranny up. I seriously doubt you will see a whole lot of difference in MPG.

Exactly! He definitely did the right thing by turning the OD off.

I think that the diesel would be a better choice at hauling heavy loads.

hauling heavy loads all the time! = Yes

hauling heavy loads occasionally = V10 is just as reliable and applicable
