97 Ford F-250HD 4x4 long bed PSD (what axle ratio)

Hi all, I'm trying to buy this 97 Ford F-250HD 4x4 long bed PSD. It has a 6 in lift that i'm want to bring to stock if I buy the truck. The owner said it a 10.25 rear axle and has 4:10 gears. Any way to verify w/o pulling the diff cover?
Can anyone tell me what axle ratio were available for this truck in 97? Could the 4:10 been added after the fact becaus he had these tall M/T swampper tires.

Also I want to use a 265 -285 75R 16 tire. Will I get a higher rpm and worse gas mileage this axle ratio of 4:10? Would a 3:73 be the stock axle ratio? I trying to sort this out before I buy the truck. Dont want to have to get into a axle swap when it will take about $2,400 to de-lift the truck. Some please let me know. Thanks for looking.

Regards,
Jim

You're paying $2400 to take off the lift? Holy smokes, I'd love to be your mechanic. You do realize it would only take a couple hundred dollars tops, plus then you can resell the lift and come out ahead on the deal. Someone gave you one hell of a snow job from the looks of it.

The gear ratio can be found on the tag on the side of the diff cover or from the axle code on the door jamb sticker. More than likely its got 4.10 gears as that was the most common ratio prior to 99. There is a slight chance its got 3.73 gears and a very minute chance its got 3.55s. By going down to a smaller tire with 4.10 gears your mileage will tank. If you want to run 285s or smaller 3.73s will give you the best balance between towing capacity and mileage. If you want to change to 3.73 gears it can be done cheaply. 10.25 axles are a dime a dozen. I can buy them all day long around here for $40. The front axle has a drop out pig like a 9" axle does. Its not hard to find an F250 in a yard with 3.73 gears (usually gas trucks).
