I wouldn't get a 5.4 in a Super Duty. They're great for 150's but for a big truck you need a big motor. My grandpa has a V10 in his 250 with 4.30 gears and it runs great. He has his own fabricating business and a boat storage so he uses the Super Duty to tow steel and boats. The only downside to it is it gets 10 mpg. Although it doesn't matter what he has on behind it, whether it's 13,000lbs of steel or nothin, it still get's 10mpg.

If you are going to put a 6 inch lift and 35's on it, don't even THINK about a 5.4.

Actually the 5.4L in a Super Duty will do well if you have some steep gears like 4:88 with a taller tire combo - kinda like the Jeep with the 4-banger. It'll do good off-road, but on the highway top speed will be lacking...but, hey, it's all in what you want.

4.88s mean he'd have to spend $1500 getting it re-geared, and it'd get crap for mileage. And cost more than a V-10.

Personally, I didn't think the 09 v10 had much punch in a 4x4 crew configuration, I wouldn't touch that truck with a smaller engine!

Like said, the upgrade to a v10 would be an easy swallow. Wether your financing or writing off a cheque, you won't even knotice that $600ish bucks and you'll be much happier. Not like you'd get any better mileage at the end of the day with the 5.4L 4x4 screw.

Also liked the idea of a lightly used v10 or diesel. You'd save thousands for much more of a truck with very little worries.

I did a quick test drive with an XLT crew cab, kinda seemed a little sluggish, but it was a brand new truck with only a few miles on it, maybe it needed to be broke in??

I only tow a jet ski and an occasional trailer or two but nothing heavy or fancy so the diesel is not needed (and with the extra 8grand, not wanted).

So you guys with the 5.4 f250, how do you like it? do you like the power... Upgrades, suspension lifts, tire/wheel combos, are they easy to find?

O, and i know the new 2011 f250's will have the 6.2 option, they just wont be out by the time i purchase.
Both of my 250s had the 5.4. I did tow a small tractor regularly (full size not yard), and putting 2000 lb pallets of pellet fuel or sand in the bed did not phase it. I averaged 14mph summer and 12 winter I did not lift or mod it in anyway.

I have test driven two F250s with the 5.4 and found them annoying to drive. There is just so much weight with the F250 you need a V10 or diesel. Very sluggish off the line unless you floor it! I am looking at the 2010 F150 but actually prefer the look and size of the F250 like you do. I may order a V10 F250 because I need the power.

Better order it now - this is the last year of the V-10 except in the commercial cab/chassis vehicles. It's being replaced by the 6.2 V-8.

If a person really wanted a V10 bad enough, he could order the cab/chassis with the V10, then install a bed on it.

Your first post. That means you signed up on this website, and brought back a 3 year old thread...just for that.

I have a crew cab 5.4 2v on 35s and 4.30s. 6" lift. 12mpg. Tow cars on trailers. Put 3300 lbs of concrete in the bed. Pulls it all fine. It's not a diesel but still pulls just fine. Half the problems and half the maintenance.
