How to price rims and tires?

A friend of mine that isn't computer savvy is trying to sell his old set of rims and tires. I'm trying to help him get rid of them, but can't find anything comparable online that's for sale that would give him a ballpark as to what they're worth. They're **** Cepek 16x? with 35" MT Baja Claw radials. Tires have at least half their tread life, if not more. I was thinking around $800, but I can't find anything for sale online that's similar. What would you guys say is fair?

IMO that price seems a little high, how old are they and what did they cost new?

I think that price is very high. Depending on condition, I think he could probably get $500 for them. I wouldn't pay that for them though.

Yep, Zaairman is right. I'd start at $500, but I know I'd never pay that for those wheels/tires. To be honest, the Baja Claws were pretty crappy tires. They did "ok" offroad, but their road manners were only poor to fair at best.

A realistic value is $50/wheel if they're aluminum (less if they're steel), and $75/tire if they're only around 50% life.

well, these are the wheels so they're definitely not el cheapo steel wheels:

in chrome, they run $250/each.

I would have thought a set of aftermarket rims and tires would fetch a bit more than say, OEM F150 wheels and tires. I sold a set of 18" FX4 wheels a few weeks ago for $400 and they were nothing special.

Welcome to the world of selling used aftermarket parts. You pay a premium new, but if you try and offload you get pennies on the dollar. Besided **** Cepek wheels are some of the bargain basement wheels (read elcheapo quality), kind of like Procomp stuff. On top of that these are only 16" wheels which aren't real popular anymore. The reason you got more for your stockers is that they're 18" wheels which bring a premium. I'd like to get rid of my wheels since I was never thrilled with them, but I know I'd get next to nothing for them so they're staying.

Nobody wants 16"s. Hell, I just traded a guy my stock 16" rims for a set of Eagle Alloy 16" rims. Rims only trade, no tires involved.

Yeah but there is a demand for 18" OEM FX4 wheels, I really dont see much of a demand for this wheel/tire combo, especially a set of 16's. I would list them on Craigslist for $450 b/o and see what happens. If you dont get any responses then you know that you are priced to high. I still think you will have a tough time selling them for $450, It all depends on how bad and quick you want to get rid of them.

Those are some ridiculously expensive 16s. I wouldn't take any less then $500

But that doesn't mean there is a demand for them

Yeah that's true but that's quite a hit to take especially when you spent a grand on just the wheels

I think you could easily get more than $500 for those wheels and tires. I would list them at $700 obo and see if anyone bites.

Thats the way things are as much as it sucks. I wish I could get as much for my wheels as I paid for them, but I know they're worth zilch now. No offense, but you seem to have pretty much made up your mind to ask $800 and just didn't like the real world price we told you they were worth. You can list them for $800, but I don't see alot of bites at that price, especially with the economy the way it is. Heck I've been trying to offload my ball bearing turbo and I was getting bites 6 months ago, but since things went bad nobody has called.

Yeah I completely agree. Look at this for an example:
i paid almost $3,400 for my wheels and tires, they currently have 50-60% tred left. I would be lucky to get $1,500-$1,800 for them if i were looking to sell them. It's just the way the used auto part market works. I also picked up a set of 22's with tires that had about 85% tred for my Pathfinder about a year ago, I got them for $850, I feel like I stole them but the guy that had them was desperate for $$.. So it always depends on the situation of the seller. If he is not in a rush to sell then he can sit on them for a few months with an asking price of $700.
Just my 2 cents

Who are you talking to? You quote Freaky, but your response is directed at me?

At any rate, I told my friend what to expect as far as pricing and he seems alright with it($500-600). He's going to list a little on the high side since people always try to lowball to get a "deal". I've found it's always harder to make a sale when you list your price as "firm". Gotta throw a little psychology in your marketing.
