P0404 and P1335 EGR? Is this an easy or expensive fix?

2008 F250 4x4 King Ranch
Driving along, empty under no load and the engine light comes on. Stopped by an Auto Zone about 20 minutes later and had them read the codes for me:

P0404 and P1335 - Anyone dealt with this? Was it something easy? Something hard? Something that is a dealer must do?

That should be covered on warranty.

common 6.4 problem. the EGR valve is coked up with soot and most likely stuck. Time to take it to a dealer this is not a DIY job. You need a special puller to change the EGR valve on a 6.4 PSD.

So I am sporting a rental car while they wait on the parts to come in (or take them off something new that is not in use!). The mechanic broke the special tool on the first try at getting it out, then broke the housing on the 2nd try! He used penetrating spray and lots of patience (he has done this several times on +08s) and still got both possibilities I read about - Glad its under warranty and glad it was someone else other than me fighting with the damn thing!
Hopefully I will be back in my truck (and out of this minivan!) by weeks end!

yes they are prone to seizing in the housing, Ford is on its second desighn puller and they still break pulling them out sometimes. Its not uncommon to need to replace the housing and the valve together. See it even more often up here in the cold weather.
