Best Manual Trans Fluid for 5 speed??

Picked up a 1997 F250 7.3 a few weeks ago. Have been noticing that the manual transmission is pretty 'notchy' and maybe this is normal for this transmission but I was going to start with changing out the fluid first since the truck has 174k miles on it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a fluid that might help smooth it out? Or should I just use the OEM lube?
Thanks in advance -

Good morning!

Some folks on here have had great success with:

Amsoil ATF: ==> http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx

Now - you may perhaps have heard that Amsoil also makes a Manual tranny fluid. However, if you would please peruse the info in this link: http://www.amsoil.com/products/trans...fluid_rec.aspx, you'd see that it was meant for non-Ford applications. ATF is the fluid of choice for Ford manuals.

I hope this was even infinitesimally helpful. Please let me know if you have any more questions, or would wish to delve into this site's excellent Search features.

Thanks MGD - I did use the search button but I limited the search to just the super duty section - maybe I should've expanded that before starting a new thread. Thanks though!

product lookup guide

Good suggestions. There is also a really good Amsoilproduct lookup application online that lists the oils spec'd for any vehicle use, as well as capacities and other useful information.
Hope this helps,
JL

The factory spec is Mercon ATF, which is no longer made. Ford says to use Mercon V, but I think I'd use any reputable brand of full synthetic ATF, as long as it's Mercon-compatible. Most "universal" synthetics are.
