I made just over $60,000 dollars fixing the 6.0 last year. Loooove that piece of **** engine.
Major Problems:
-EGR Coolers
-EGR Valves
-Oil Cooler
-Headgasket (headbolts)
-Injectors
-FICM (Fuel Injection Control Mod)
-EBP sensor
Cheapest item here runs almost $200.00 Thank you Intertrashional!!!!

When I was an Amsoil dealer, they said you could run the oil indefinitely with periodic UOA, and change it when the analysis indicated that it's time. I had a bypass system on my Festiva and got 60k out of the oil.
However, common sense tells me this - if you put a bypass on a 6.0, change the oil and full flow as per Ford's recommended intervals just to avoid any warranty hassles.

extended drain intervals in 7.3
I also had a 1986 Dodge gas (318) 3/4 ton 4x4 that I bought new, and never changed the oil. On that vehicle, I did oil analysis, and changed the filter when the analysis suggested I should which usually worked out to once every 6-12 months. It ran perfectly up to about 100k, when I sold it to my dad and he totalled it by rolling the thing while pulling a horse trailer.
I know there are a lot of folks who aren't comfortable with it, but in my experience I have done it, and not encountered any issues.
just my opinion

Frantz!
Yeah, I know Frantz! They are also great, I have used them, and we had them on lots of vehicles back on the farm. Some changes with the manufacturer and now you buy them from http://www.wefilterit.com/
The main reason I moved away from them is they are a little messier since they are not a spin on, but they are a great quality filtration system.

I ran extended drain intervals in my 2003 7.3 with no issues. I did not have the bypass system, just changed the regular filter according to Amsoil recommendations. I used this stuff; http://bit.ly/AmsoilDiesel-Marine and ran it for one year, per Amsoil recommendations without any issue.

bxk109, what Ford diesel is the most reliable in your opinion? I loved my 7.3, and may be looking for another 7.3. Something about more mass that seems to indicate durability.

back in the day when 7.3s were all over it was quite surprising how many 7.3s you could fix a "dies when hot" on just by changing the oil. If you ran the oil too long when it reached operating temp the oil would be to low in viscosity to keep ICP high enough, and the engine will just die, imagine what that low viscosity is doing to the rest of the engine...

Displacement has nothing to do with durability. But the EPA does! The 7.3 is a great engine, mostly because it doesn't share any of the 6.0L emissions components. The 7.3L does not have an EGR cooler or an EGR valve. It is a Huei system, yes, which is just a way of getting fuel into the engine. Also the 24 and 12 valve (pre 2007) cummins 5.9L engine is very reliable. Don't know too much about the duramax. But yes the 7.3L is great. I saw one 7.3 in the shop the other day with 550,000 miles. Ran good too.
