so my dad bought a 08 f-250 crew cab with the 8ft bed with the 5.4 two years ago and hates it because it has no power and gets horrible mileage.

recently he has started to look at 30 ft trailers for a hunting cabin

heres a couple questions, does he

a) try to sell it privately outright? he still owes i think about $28k or so on it

b) take it in and buy a 2010 f-350 diesel

c) wait for the 2011 but wait awhile because he wont be able to afford the payments because of the price of a new lariat ~$56k

d) just live with his decision?

thanks guys

a) Good luck. Not too many people want a Super Duty with a 5.4, especially a long bed crew.

b) I wouldn't. The 6.4 doesn't get very good mileage either.

c) That's the best option - wait till they have been on the road for a while to make sure the new engine doesn't have major issues.

d) He may have to for a while.

whats the usual mileage of the 6.4?

we just drove a 2010 king ranch loaded today, $46k and might have gotten a little off that

Mixed driving, I get between 13 and 14 MPG. My '04 F150 with a 5.4L never got over 12 MPG, so I am not really sure why so many people rag the 6.4L. Plus, when I had my '04 F150, I ran a tuner with a performance tune that required 93 octane gas, which costs more than diesel. Add in the fact that the 6.4L will get about the same mileage empty or towing, and the difference between the diesel and the gas is huge. Don't take advice about diesels from people who don't even own or drive one. They will usually just spout off myths that they have heard, mainly spread by other people who know nothing about diesels, just to make themselves feel better about their inferior trucks.

In comparison to other diesels, the 6.4 does not get particularly good mileage.

we are a little scared about the MPG of the 6.4, we are hearing it averages around 12 mpg which is usually only about 1-2 mpg better than the 5.4L (not towing)

if we were to get it, we would add the gryphon of course as well as CAI and possibly exhaust. What mileage would this be looking at? Would it make more sense to just wait and see what the new 2011 is getting mpg wise?

The new 6.7 is supposed to get considerably better mileage, but you have the additional expense of keeping the urea tank full. To get considerably better mileage out of a 6.4 you have to void the warranty with a DPF delete.

well he has one mountain pass to cross, height is about 3,200 feet i think. then its all down hill and mostly flat ground.

so he can keep the current one and live with it for awhile and see what the 2011 brings

however if he does get the 2010, he gets a hell of a deal on one, which he wont with a 2011

so were just going back and forth now. MPG is a big issue and if the 6.4 would get say 16 mpg with a tuner and CAI then it only gets 6 mpg better than the gas

the 2011 should average 16 mpg stock so like i said its just back and forth
