2010 Superduty V8 vs V10

I currently own a 2005 F150 5.4L V8 (pictures in profile). It is lifted with 325/65/18 Toyo tires. I have a 21 foot deckboat (approx 3000 lbs.). I am not a big fan of how it tows with the lift and tires. One, it sits so high it is hard to actually hook the boat up to it. Then, while towing, I can't see behind the boat, which I am not a fan of.
So, I am looking at a new truck. I have ruled out a new F150 because they are UGLY.
I was offered a great trade on my current truck.
I am more interested in the 2010 due to the great rebates.
I have ruled out a diesel also because that is just too much truck and suck gas mileage for what I am needing it for.
So, my questions are these:
Is it better to get a V8 or V10?
What is gas mileage like on either of these?
What is the real difference between the 3.55 and 3.73 gears?
Is there a real disadvantage to either of these?

Thanks for any input.

You'd be a fool to buy a Superduty with a 5.4. Go with the V-10 and 4.10 gears. Both motors will only get you 12-13 MPG unloaded on a good day.

i agree.. 5.4 is terrible in a superduty. i had a 09 250 with the 5.4 and it was way to underpowered. i traded for a 08 150 5.4 and i love it. 5.4 is a good reliable motor but not powerful enough to be pullling around a superduty.

Ok guys, thanks for the response.
What if I went with the 6.4 Diesel? Am I right in thinking it is just too much truck? If the gas mileage is worse or the same, I am not really interested in spending 30 cents more per gallon for the same mileage. Especially since I am not doing a LOT of heavy towing.

I get about 14 MPG unloaded with 3.73 gears and heavy 35" tires. With the V10, I would be closer to 9 MPG.

DIESEL. why even buy a superduty if your not gonna get a diesel? IMO theres no such thing as "too much truck" but more importantly diesels dont get bad gas mileage comparable to gas engines. i drive my f150 4.6 and get 14-15 my father drives a 2500HD with the 6.6 duramax and gets over 17. good gas mileage can be had with a diesel. but the sheer amount of power potential with the diesel over the gas is too much reason not to buy a gas in a superduty truck IMO

BS. I just made a 600 mile round trip with my horse trailer which weighs ~10k lbs loaded for a weekend barrel race and I got 9 mpg. Empty I see 11-12mpg and I'm running 35s too.

Too funny - the 'get a diesel ' crowd

The V10 is plenty capable....

Empty - running stock 33's w/ 4:30 gearing I get 9-10 mpg city / 13 mpg hwy.

When loaded up heavy - , I don't even bother thinking about it.

Maybe, but I recently got over 17MPG on a trip to Florida, and I'm pretty sure that the V10 would never see that kind of mileage. I average 14MPG around town.

I'm sure my fuel mileage would be better if I didn't have 3.73's...do you have 3.55's or 3.73's?

Get a 2011 with the new 6.2 Gas motor. You figure if your going to spend an extra dough to buy a 2010 diesel you could just put the cash towards the new gasser. You'd have the new model, a gasser that would be all YOU would need and still be up some cash!!
