New to diesles. Are they sluggish from a stop?

I was test driving an '07 F350 with a 6.0 PSD. When I accelerate from a complete stop, the truck is very slow off the line but then quickly builds up speed. Is that "turbo lag"? Is that normal for a diesel?

Pretty normal, unless it's the new 6.7. Lots of claims of no turbo lag.

Now if you want a quick takeoff, do a brake-stand and hold the boost to 20lbs and let it loose. You'll scare the crap out of yourself and anyone else around you. That truck will take off like a raped ape!

Yeah, turbo lag is something you get used to with a diesel. It is true that the 6.7L in the new 2011 Super Duty has less turbo lag, but it is still there. You just have to learn how to take off fast with a diesel. It takes a little more skill. You put your right foot on the gas and your left foot on the brake. Hold the brakes and press the throttle until you build up 30-40 lbs of boost, then drop the hammer and let go of the brakes and hold on. I can spin all four tires from a stop if I have it in 4-wheel high.

Oh, and if the truck has traction control, be sure to turn that crap off!

Probably not, but it's fun! As long as I'm going in a straight line, I think I'll be ok.
