Anybody towing heavy with a new 6.7L?

It looks like we'll be upgrading horse trailers around the first of the year, and the models we've been looking at are pretty heavy for the current truck. I've read about how the new diesel drives empty, but haven't been able to find anything about it towing a heavy trailer. I'm curious how they do with a load and what kind of mileage to expect.

Are you looking at something in the F-450 territory?

Check out some of the Powerstroke or diesel specific forums. Those who have towed heavy with their 6.7s think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Even guys who were die hard to the 7.3 have been converted.

I think I read a test where a magazine got 15 mpg towing a 9000# Airstream.

Don't forget, you have a urea tank to keep full.

That test was a joke. Why would they choose an airstream to test towing capability on a diesel pickup.

And it's early yet. Give it a year, then you'll know if it's worth buying or not.

Guy I know with more money than brains has one... He bought a 6.7 F-250. He uses it to tow more than his "work" truck, which is an 09 6.4 F-450. So yeah, they do good. :santa:

Just an example. Not everyone tows 10k+ 5ers with diesels. That's a hell of a lot better than any gasser would do.

Have to dig up that article. I don't remember that trailer weighing anything near 9,000lbs...

Gasser does fine with 9k, diesel does better. Gasser would be lucky to get 10 mpg. Don't forget, the OP already has a SD with a V-10 and he's getting a bigger trailer that would probably put it over limits.

The magazine article I read had the truck towing a 6k lb Airstream. That doesn't tell me anything.

The trailers that I'm looking at are gonna be ~16k lbs loaded for a race, and 8' wide. They also have high tongue weights, so that means F350 dually at a minimum.

I'd wait a while and see what more people are saying about them, but I'll be buying a trailer in a few months. There's always the option of adding airbags to my current truck and using it until more info is out there.

This has nothing to do with needing a diesel to pull a bigger trailer. If they still offered the V10 in a F350, that's what I'd be getting. I won't even consider a 6.4L. Since the new trucks came out my local dealer is covered in used 6.4Ls and can't give away the leftover '10s.

You can still get it in a F-450 cab/chassis - then get a custom box for it.

I tow a 40' 5'er with a loaded weight of 14k lbs. I used to own an 05 F250 Powerstroke Diesel and it towed it great. With this new truck, I can't even tell it's back there. I really need to punch it to get it to drop down to 5th gear. It gives me from 10-11mpg at 70mph. I love it. Here's a pic.

Since you'd be carrying more weight than me, I'd go at least F350. Good Luck.

And yes, it squats down quite a bit from the rear but that's cuz it's got a minor lift on it. Sit's completely level with no weight on it. No biggy.
