08-10 6.4L Long term reliability?

Hey guys,

Looking into my options for a diesel pick-up more suited to haul new equipment for my business...

One of the most cost effective options I've found so far is an 08 6.4L KR, with about 100,000 miles. I put one quite a fair bit of mileage, if I drove it like I drove my current Ford, It would be at 200,000 in under 2 years.

I did a google search looking for anything on long term reliability, only came up with one thread that seemed to go with the concensus that it could be a real strong truck in the long term, provided you scrap the emissions crap and put a small tune on it.

Has anyone else heard of anything related to the long term? If you could share your opinions or any links, I'd appreciate it.

I've seen the 6.4L bare stock with 300,000K on it and still running strong.

Why don't you shop around a little more and see if you can find one with less miles on it?

I have not heard of many issues with the 6.4 other than the fuel milage being in the tank when towing. But a tune and DPF delete would solve the problem and I will tell you that buying a diesel out of warranty is an expensive proposition as I have found out in the last two years. And if you are going to be towing with the truck quite a bit I would spend the money on a set of aftermarket gauges for it (Pyrometer, Trans temp, and Boost) to make sure you dont toast something towing.

Thanks guys,

STX- There's not much for good used diesels around here these days, I don't know what's happened, I remember browsing last year and there were tons.

Unfortunatley for the Ford world, I think for my price-range, need's and concerns, I'll be heading into a 2nd gen 5.9L with the stick.

I hate that the newer diesels are such pigs on fuel. I think my best option right now is going for the tried and true Cummins.

Is it bad to say that what I probably like most about ford is the Door Keypad? Love that thing.

Nothing againt the 7.3L other then I've heard the 5.9L kicks the crap out of the 7.3L in terms of fuel economy.

That and there's even less 7.3's around then 5.9's, the market is saturated with those 6.0's.

If you think a 7.3 is thirsty, then you're going to crap yourself when you see what a 6.4 gets.

Refer to post where I changed my direction to the Cummins.

I'm aware the 6.4 is a pig, hense why in another post I stated that.

I don't agree with this....

I get better MPG with my 08 6.4L pulling 7,500 pounds then I did pulling the same trailer with my dads 7.3L.
