"31 miles to empty" Yeah right....

That's the routine. I do this drive frequently and always stop at the same place. I usually stop at the last exit in Barstow at Lenwood/outlets. The wife and 3 year old were sleeping and I got pinched by a semi trying to merge over. I thought about exiting at Outlet Center where the desert races pit and doubling back but my guage was reading "50 miles" at that point so I thought "No problem, only 20 miles to Victorville"

I suspect that when you fill up the truck you can drive for about 30 miles and it still reads full, so you should have known its inaccurate. My 150 is the opposite of yours, I have a 25.5 gallon tank and I have never put more than 23 gallons in it and I have had the needle buried. If your so mad at Ford for its gas guage, go buy a chevy and then when the fuel light is on leaving the gas station after filling up comeback.

I trust my Scanguage more than the vehicle. But I really would have thought the calibration on your truck would be toward the side of caution. Meaning, when it said 30 miles, you actually have more. I hate to admit it, but I would have done the same thing I'm sure. Just because I would have felt the lie o meter was less accurate the other way.
Just for giggles, think I'll put in an empty 5 gal can in my truck just for Luck!

Don't know the math of it, but it amazes me how many times I have filled up and if the Scanguage says it will take 11.1 gallons, it is usually within a couple of tenths. And the Scanguage will usually show more gallons remaining than the lie o meter, although I never take it down lower than 1/4 tank to know for sure.

So it sounds like this is not an uncommon problem. For those of you who get nervous at half tank and question my responsibility with having THIRTY miles to go on the gauge, WHAT IS THE POINT IN HAVING A GAUGE IF IT'S NOT ACCURATE? How hot is the motor and the trans when those gauges show normal temps? I wonder if Chevy's and Dodge's are this inaccurate.

I can't say I'm all that familiar with the gauges on the 350s, but if it's anything like the 150s, the gauges on the dash are virtually useless. That's why alot of people get things like the ScanGauge II or an Edge to monitor various parameters directly from the trucks computer.

That thing don't lie... and if it does, it's the computer that's doing all the fibbing.
