Would you buy a truck that was previously in an accident? [and fixed]

Well like the title says, just wondering what your thoughts are on buying a truck that was previously in an accident and fixed.

Found an 08 F350 Harley w/under 30k miles. Truck has a 6-inch RevTech lift with 37-12.50 Toyo Open-Country's. Loaded except for Nav, and they want $40k for it.

The current owner is the owner of an auto-body shop, and this is his personal truck. Truck was involved in a "minor" accident at 11k miles, cabin damage on the left side. The whole cab was replaced with a new one from Ford, and he's put 19k miles on it since.

I would be selling my current truck, an 05 F350 Harley w/24k miles, no accidents and 100% stock / original except the bed liner and roll-cover, and DVD in the roof.
Any thoughts on my trucks value? Dealer offered me 30k last weekend, told me I could get 35k privately. 5k to to move to a lifted 08 seems reasonable...?

Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
-Josh

As long as it doesnt have a salvage title i say go for it. People can say what they want if its fixed right there is no differance in that truck and one that wasnt wrecked.

Depends what the "minor" accident was. If they replaced the entire CAB, I'm thinking the "minor" accident was a rollover. Check to see if it has a salvage title or not. But, since it is the owners personal vehicle, I'm sure it was repaired correctly.

Why not add up the plusses and minuses of the move. For example: you will get worse mileage with the 6.4 than you do with your 6.0...even worse with it lifted. As far as it being his "personal truck," can he prove he owned it before the accident, or might he have picked it up in a state where "totals" are not tagged with salvage titles, fix it, and put it up for sale? And, what is he going to replace it with? Something similar, or why is he putting it up for sale. I see some red flags here, but then I like to know all the facts before making such a move. If you know someone at a Ford dealership, they can run the VIN to tell you the in-service date, if it is still covered under the factory warranty and where it was sold new...that's about all they can legally tell you though, for example not the original owner's name. Keep us posted, I would be interested in what you find out and what you do with the information.

A few of mine have R titles, but as long as it is all fixed correctly, I don't have a problem.

Ask him if he has any pictures of the damage and how much the repair cost (actual resonable cost, not his shops cost).
Depending which state you are in and the laws, he would have to disclose the damage information.
A Carfax report would shed some light also on the repair history.

Not if he didn't report it.

It looks like a nice truck but if it was wrecked I'd stay away from it. My Taurus was wrecked before I got it and it made all kinds of strange noises and pulled to right after numerous alignments. It might be pretty but is it mechanically sound?

$40k for an 08 that's been wrecked. you could buy those new for ~48k, it's now a 3 year old truck, that's been wrecked. does revtek make a 6" lift? i don't think so but i could be wrong. you can find the same truck all day long for $40k.

to put it in perspective for you, there is/was a 08 f250 that had been wrecked on powerstroke.org for $28k with 2x,xxx miles. was either a xlt or lariat, can't remember.

edit: i guess they do make 6" lifts for them. never heard of anyone running anything more than a leveling kit from them though.

Agree with this. That truck is worth no more than high 20's IMO. I've been looking at 08-09 Super Dutys and they're fairly easy to find here in the Atlanta area for low 30k's with around 40-50k miles on them. These are nice trucks too. Lariat, Super Crews, 4x4, moonroof, etc. Not stripped work trucks a that price. I found a really nice 09 with 3600 miles for 35,000k that sold before I could get it.

Speaking of would you buy? I have found a 2004 Harley F-250 with 101k miles. Truck is immaculate. No door dings or damaged paint, bed even looks almost new, very little sign wear on inside. Fully loaded! Clean CarFax. What worries me is how that engine has been maitained. The man obviously takes care of his truck; however, tht doesn't mean he knows how to maintain a diesel. Can you guys offer any insight on that 6.0? Should I stay away from it? Find a 6.4? Buy the new one when they start showing up used? Not opposed to buying a new later this year when the rebates soar.

The 04 6.0 was pretty bad. If you buy it, budget a few grand to make the engine right.

It's a really nice truck don't get me wrong. But honestly.. Anything that's been in an accident, even minor, repaired, painted etc I'd stay away from. There's plenty trucks out there, just take your time and find the right one.

If the owner owns a body shop and claims it was only a minor accident he should have taken pics before he repaired it just to show future owners when the time came to sell "kinda as proof" it was minor. He didn't. Keep looking.
