F-350 advice, please

My local dealer is trying to interest me in a 2010 F-350 leftover. It's the four-door crew cab, with a 5.4 V8, automatic, tow kit (which I think means a 3.73 rear), etc. The kicker, and why I think he still has it, is that it's 2 wheel drive. The 2WD parts is why he called me, he knows I dislike 4WD.

I don't really tow much -- my winters supply of wood pellets, a couple motor cycles sometimes, and a few times a year I help my dad haul antique tractors (6K-8K load). My daughter is still home, so the four door part would be nice.

My daily commute is 15miles of 2 lane, one way. My F150 (4.6) gets about 17mpg as a daily driver. I'm looking for opinions on how big a hit will the mpg take?

Well, my '08 was a 4x2 and stick shift red headed abandoned step child, and why I was able to get a hella deal out the door for it. Don't have a 5.4L, so can't give you the mileage number, but crew cabs are nice, and will handle a trailer nicer.

I don't think there are non tow package superduties either.

Imo, I think the superduty is too heavy for a 5.4 gasser.

Lots of 5.4 Superdutys out there being used as work trucks with a gazillion miles on them.

It's slow and sucks gas, but it will run reliably forever. Expect about 12 mpg on your commute.

I didn't know they even made F-350s with the 5.4 in them. The trucks gonna be slow, and have pretty bad gas mileage, but should last a long time. My f150 5.4 gets around 13-14mpg, I can't imagine what a 350 with a 5.4 gets.

The only thing it sucks is gas..........what do you expect for a heavy truck?

Fuel cost per mile isn't much better with a diesel and the gas V-10 gets almost as good mileage as the 5.4.

If your F-150 has the 2 valve 4.6 with 4 speed auto and you are happy with the performance, the 5.4 in a F-350 will do the job for you. However, if you have the 3 valve with 6 speed auto, you may be disappointed. Have you test driven the thing yet?

Fully expected; I'm just wondering what "real-world" estimates are.

My '10 F-150 does indeed have the 2 valve 4.6 and the 4 speed auto. When I've put a load on it, I've not been terribly disappointed in the performance, but I'm not one to go hurtling down the interstate at 75Mph with a 7,000 pound payload hitched up. Generally speaking, I've got a light foot -- my F150 gets appx 17mpg in the summer, a little less in the winter.

We did test drive it on the interstate, about 12 miles r/t. My wife and I both thought the performance was OK, but of course there wasn't any load in it either. From the back seat I heard my 13 year old daughter proclaim "this truck eats smart cars for breakfast". It's got all the creature comforts -- trailer brake, mirrors, sync, cd, a/c, etc. The four door part, along with being 2wd, is what caught my eye.

I'm pretty happy with my F150, so I'm not highly motivated. The sales guy called last week while we were on vacation. I'll return the call tomorrow to see what's on his mind.

thx to all for the advice.

As GLC stated, it will be a fairly slow truck, but I'm like you, 2wd is all I want. It sounds like a nice truck and you could even tune it if you wanted to for more power I bet

Also remember this truck will outperform the best gas truck of 15 years ago. Roll back the clock and lots of people spec'ed 460 rigs if they didn't want a powerstroke.
