Making a PSD 7.3 Whistle

How do i make my truck have that whistle sound at idle like i hear on some videos. I am talking about my early 99 psd not a 6.0. Will a open air intake do the trick? I get plenty of whistle when on the throttle driving its insanely loud.

my truck has the stock OEM airbox. Will a aftermarket cold air intake do the trick? I know turbos are not all spooled up at idel but it is still turning way fast enough to be heard at idle.

It has to do with number of vanes on the exhaust side of the turbo and I have never really heard a stock 7.3 whistle all that much at idle. The only 7.3 trucks that I have heard really whistle are nonstock turbo trucks or trucks with Wicked Wheels installed them and they are still pretty quite compared to a 6.0. If you are not going to make big HP(500+) on a Power Stroke I would leave the intake alone.

swapping the turbo out, open exhaust and an open intake will make it whistle

Even at idle with an aftermarket turbo (ie 38R) its still not going to whistle. You need the turbo spinning at higher rpms to make that noise. The reason the 03 6.0L trucks whistle like they do is because of the number of vanes and the fact that its a VGT. No way to make a 7.3L sound like that thank god!

On a 7.3L a good open air intake (NOT a K&N) will help the turbo spool up, even on a stock engine. The 6.0L doesn't need an aftermarket intake until you're pushing 500+hp. You can buy the same intake thats used on the 6.0L for a 7.3L called the AIS or severe service intake. Its an OEM part that Ford released for the 7.3Ls. Filters aren't cheap though ($100+), but it is the best flowing and best filtering system out there.

He's got an early 99 so he doesn't need the wicked wheel, he's already got it.
