I'm a high school senior and am trying to finish my senior project which is a 78 f-250 was f-150 with 400. I would like to put a ford idi in it but can't find any at decent price for what they are. I ran into a 53-3 series detroit and was told they would realy scream in a full sized truck. If I could find an idi would it bolt up to my transmission or would I have to replace it. Transmission is either 435 new process or borg warner T-18. I would appreciate some responses. If I can't find a diesel what could i do to my 400.

Look into a Cummins 4BT swap. It's supposedly very straightforward.

 

Don't know much about detroits other than my 6.2L, but it has been done before I've seen on youtube, so search around.

7.3L IDI, PSD's, and even 6leakers have been put into 70's trucks, but your fab skills need to be sharp, and a complete running donor truck is a must.

As for a 400? Pull it and swap for a 460 if you don't do a diesel.
