I agree I like the older body style. Still do t know what would best fit me. I won't be pulling the horse all the times just here and there. Still want a truck that will do it. Maybe just the basic f150 will do fine. I can get away with hauling my other trailers with just an f150 but the horse is my concern yanno ?

How big of a horse trailer are you pulling? The SuperDuty feels MUCH more stable than a 1/2 ton with a trailer. I would hate to pull mine with my old f150.

The V-10 gets about 9 mpg towing and 12 to 14 mpg empty.

Yes and no. The '97-'03 half ton body style was the last year for a 4x4 V8 five speed M5OD-R2. The '04-'09ish could also be special ordered with the M5OD-R2, but only with the V6 and 4x2. If you want a stick you gotta get a superduty from '99 to '10. with various years having different combos of the big bomb proof S5-47 or S6-650

Well a lot are/were mad, but the demand just had dropped off and it showed in sales. When I chatted with a Ford powertrain engineer at a car show, he said my '08 6.4L PSD with the S6-650 six speed was ordered less than 5% of the time. Ford is required to certify each drivetrain combo for emissions so from '10 to '11 with the switch of 3 motors and 2 trannys to 2 motors and 1 tranny Ford saved a boat load of money at the exclusion of a minority. Chevy gave up on the six speed back in '07 with the Duramax, and Dodges suck so bad I don't even look at what they have going on.

Couple different choices goin' back to the '80s if we want to talk about those. The ****ty SROD/TOD four speed overdrive units were replaced with the M5OD-R2 in '88. The Mazda gets a bad rap, but it's biggest failure point is with higher horsepower modifications. They just can't take more torque than a 302 or 4.6L and live long. Stock power even towing I have not broken one yet. Now if you don't care about OD, the bombproof granny low NP-435, Borg Warner T-18, and syncro granny low T-19 will live forever, but '93 was the last year of the T-19 in a half ton. Ironically the only one I've ever seen in '93 was an Eddie Bauer.

there are ways to get great mileage in a 6.0l... one is dont drive like a jacka$$ i get 20+ mpg with mine if i keep my speed under 70mph or as others have said, less than 2000 rpm, above that, the mpg drops of very quick. i get anywhere from 12-14 mpg city depending on which way i take to work.

my best tank so far has been 21.1 mpg, 100% high way @ 70mph
my worst tank was 10.4 mpg, 50/50 city/highway towing a decent sized trailer(29 ft boat 11,000 lbs)

Well it'll just be a simple single horse horse trailer with only one quater horse in it. I should be able to haul that just fine with an f150 right and how can you improve mpg on the v10 may just look into on of them.

There really is no way to improve the gas mileage on a V-10. Not exactly a great choice for a daily driver, but it's an excellent dedicated towing choice.

Put 28" tires on it, remove all the seats, and drive like a grandma, that's about it

Would I regular f150 haul a horse trailer fine? Also can you buy a standard transmission for a 2004 ford F150 5.4. How much would it cost ?

No, like I said the M5OD-R2 was last used only in the '97-'03 F-150s w/ the 4.2L and 4.6L. Rare oddball '04+ 4x2 4.2L trucks pop up for sale time to time.

Yes, a single or 2 stall stock trailer is absolutely fine with an F-150. You won't get to the farm show first in front of hopped up diesels, but keep in mind the 5.4L is more power than a one ton with a 460 from ten years before.

Horsepower, speed, reliability. Pick any two, you can't have all three.

Well, you just have to step up to an F-2/350 before '11. Absolutely love my '08 ZF6 other than being 4x2. No matter what the others say, I'll always think my left foot will do a better job than a torq***** computer.

The granny low and R being right inline like a big truck makes parkin' a trailer super slick simple, and I'll never trade this truck away simply for being the last six speed motor combo available. Even though the 6.7L has advantages over the 6.4L, I won't make the jump to slushbox.

Well, in order to tow with a modern Ford truck with a standard transmission, your ONLY choice is a 2010 or earlier F-250/350. There are 3 engine choices - a 5.4, a V-10, or a diesel. The 5.4 won't get any better mileage than a V-10 when towing, and unloaded it's very little better. When you figure the higher diesel fuel costs and higher diesel maintenance costs, you won't be saving money with a diesel.

The M5OD equipped F-150's are not rated to tow over 3500#.
