The older ZF5's also have a granny low, so you drive it like a 4 speed. The top gear in that is also an overdrive.
The definition of overdrive is a ratio higher than 1:1 direct. Lower ratios are considered underdrive.

Lots of great info here. I moved from a F-150 to a 2006 6.0 last spring. The main reason for me was I was able to find a nice lariat CC 4x4 6.0 for thousands less than a newer F-150 with an ecoboost or 5.0.
There is a lot of "hype" out there on how bad the 6.0 is. I reality you can find many reputable shops that will do the head gaskets and all the updates (dummy plugs, Stand pipes/check valves, blue spring upgrade, STC fitting, new oil cooler) including getting the heads decked for $4000 or less. Other than gaskets, with a decent set of tools and some patience the average wrench can do everything themselves.
They are pretty good once that is done. I do pay a little more for maintenance, but I am sure I am balancing it out with MPG's vs. V10. (Diesel is cheaper than gas in Canada too). I am extremely happy with my diesel and with the wealth of info on forums (if you can weed through the crap) and a decent monitoring system (Scan Gauge, Edge CTS , AE, etc.), you can stay on top of things and deal with them before they can leave you in a lurch. Also stay off of the hot tunes.
My buddy has a fleet of 12 6.0's ranging from '03's to '07's and they are tow trucks and plow trucks in Winnipeg, aka "Winterpeg". they have had issues, but he honestly thinks they are very reliable overall and wouldn't switch to anything else other than newer fords. some have serious km's on them 500k+.
Regardless, chose whatever is best for you, the newer F-150's can tow some serious numbers, but IMHO just as with anything else, if it is being used at it's limits all the time, you will run into issues eventually.

We have higher taxes on fuel then the States, way higher. Lately Diesel has been more than Gas, but that has only been the case very recently. Often Diesel will stay the same prince when Gas fluctuates.
In Vancouver right now Gas is the equivalent to $4.40 per Gallon and Diesel is equivalent to $5.12 a Gallon. But we have do have some of the most expensive fuel in the country. As an example Diesel is only $4.54 per Gallon in Calgary.
We are stuck with low Sulfur Diesel too...
