2005 6.0 diesel

Looking at getting a 2005 f250 6.0 diesel. Iv read they have a good bit or problems with that motor. I also read. Tho that if you don't but programmers and chips in them they will last. Also read that if you change the oil filter every 10 k to 15 k miles and you put the cold air intake I think it was it cold something and you run an oil plus fuel mixture and run the correct oil and change it out everytime it needs it it'll run good. Also read that you should drive it like you stole it to keep the turbos cleaned out. What do you guys think? Truck has 156k miles. What's your guys opion on this motor and should I be worried with that many miles ? I know diesels are ment to have a lot of miles on them. I don't mind to put a little money into it like cold air I take and stuff but I really don't wanna spend the money to get like the motor rebuilt and stuff. Thanks for the help !

Hard to say, ive known some people that has had em and they have been in the shop constantly and others that have had good luck with them. My buddy has a 03 6.0 all stock with 280k on it but its finally time for head gaskets, arp head studs, Egr delete etc. just started acting up the last month.. He went and bought a f150 supercrew and is selling the 6.0, he just dont want to dump the money into it having so many miles.

My opinion? I'll get slammed for this, but I won't touch a 6.0 with a 10 foot pole.

Why do you feel you need a diesel?

The '05 should be good to go. Check if it has a coolant flush, if not, the oil cooler and EGR cooler will clog right after the change. There is a specific sequence to the coolant flush, although it will most likely clog up the works even so..........Check the EGR valve, if it is wet or damp, the cooler is toast................$2000-2500 repair....

Change the oil every 5k using Motorcraft oil and filter, fuel filter every 10k using Motorcraft filters, leave the intake alone unless you plan on breaking the 500hp threshold or you like replacing the turbo charger because Cold Air Intakes don't filter well enough. Yes the 6.0 likes to be run and worked hard to keep the turbo charger clean they also don't like idling for long periods. My advice on tuners is to leave them alone if you are looking reliability. As far as spending money on the truck they are expensive to run and maintain I spent 7k alone fixing the Head Gaskets and a stretched Exhaust Valve in 2012 plus various repairs to the truck over the 5 years I've owned it. Any diesel truck is going to be expensive to own so don't let the Dodge or Chevy boys blow smoke up your hind end.

Well I'm gonna be hauling a horse and I haul some trailers here and there. I usually have a good bit of loads in the bed when there isn't a trailer hooked behind me. But from what I can see I don't think I wanna go with the 6.0 mainly because Iv heard more bad then good about then from what I have read by looking up stuff in them. Really looking for a 7.3

I absolutely love mine. It's all about proper maintenance with the 6.0. Follow it strictly and you'll have a great dependable truck.

7.3s are getting tough to find with reasonable amount of mileage on em. As much as I wouldn't buy a 6.0 without immediately dumping thousands into ARP head studs, EGR delete, and some other things, a newer 6.0 in good shape is potentially better than a really old 7.3. They're all expensive to maintain and get ready to pull from the retirement fund if something major goes wrong in the motor . . . Dumbass buddy put a wrong additive in his 5.9's fuel and dropped 6, close to 7, grand on new injectors, fuel pump, and dropping them fuel tank and flushing the system. Completely his fault, but a repair for just the motor cost as much as an entire new drivetrain for my F150 . . .

I love diesels, but ya really do gotta pay to play with them.

You never could get a strong manual in a F-150, they all had the light duty Mazda box and only with a V-6 or 4.6. If you want a manual and don't want to deal with a high maintenance diesel, look for a Super Duty with a V-10. It may be a gas motor but it pulls like a diesel.

Ford quit making em after I think 2010. You can get single cab XL F150s with a 5 speed at least through 2008, but it ain't gonna tow, like glc said, a big horse trailer or anywhere near a diesel.

Never is a long time. I think ford offered a 4 speed manual back in the 80s? that was actually a 3 speed with an additional granny 1st gear that may have been more heavy duty. I know the trans was offered but I'm not sure how much it was rated to tow.

there are a couple V10s for sale around here but the gas millage sucks. I'd really like a standard but would settle for an automatic.I like the 04 and newer f150s but idk if theyll get done what I need.
