Question Oil weight and brand???

Hey everyone,

What type and weight of oil are you using in your SuperDuty Gas trucks? I have a 2002 F-250 SD with the 5.4 V8 and on the cap it recomends 5w-20 (not a typo). Is anyone else using this weight, and where and what kind are you buying. I had thought about using 5x30 in the winter and 10x30 in the summer. What do you think.

Also, Will be changing the oil for the first time @1000 miles for the breakin period..
Thought about using a synthetic oil, Castrol Syntec, Valvoline, etc.

What are your opinions?

Have always used castrol in my 97 F150. 10w30 Winter and 10w40 in summer.

Thanks in advance,

It's your warranty...

I'd recommend using oil that meets Ford's specifications. Right now, the only oil that does this is 5W20. You can buy Motorcraft "synthetic blend" oil at Wal-Mart for $1.77/qt.

nomo,

Is this the oil that you use in your 6.8L ? And does yours call for the 5w20?

Thanks for the reply.

In 2000, most Ford vehicles required 5w-30. In 2001, most for vehicles required 5w-20..
They made no changes to the engines in anyway that would necessitate the need for the 5w-20.

I believe your warranty would still be in effect if you ran 5w-30. I know of dealerships that when changing the oil on 01' trucks they put in 5w-30.

That being said, I run 5w-30 in my 00' SuperDuty and 5w-20 in my 01' Escape..

When my 2002 F250 s-cab v10 Lariat comes to me in about 2 weeks I will be using the same oil that I use in all my vehicles. that is Mobil One. I will use the 5w-30 in the V10 until Mobil comes out with there 5w-20 which should be soon. I had a 2000L with the 5.4 supercharged engine in it and the 2001 said use the 5w-20 but there is no difference in the engines tolerances. so the 5w-30 will work fine. plus Mobil One synthetics far exceeds anything that Motorcraft will produce. I read somewhere on a site that the reason Ford went to the 5w-20 oil was because of the C.A.F.E. fuel requirements by the government. not sure if this is true or not. thanks 95rcobra.

Yes! I use the 5W-20 from Wal-Mart. It comes in a red bottle.

Please- everyone read your warranty books carefully. Ford requires the oil to meet specification WSS-M2C153-H AND have the API Certification Mark.

I would like to point out that the "H" is emphasized because it is the gotcha for most oils. None of the Mobil 1 products nor the AMSOil 5W-30 fulfill this requirement (they meet the "G" requirement of pre-2001). In fact, very few oils meet both requirements. Of those that DO meet the requirements, all are 5W-20.

Use what you want, I'm just trying to warn you about the possible hazards.
