Question 1999 F250 super duty

Fellow super duty owners,

I am considering buying a used (99) super duty super cab 6 speed off road that has about 60k miles on it. These motors are suppose to be the best out there. Should I have any apprehensions in going through with this purchase? I am going to look at it today, so there is the normal "how does it run now questions" and I will try to get in touch with any of the previous owners. Just thought I would ask.

runnert, don't know if this will make any difference to you or whether you already know this but, the '99 SD F250 got the older 5.4L (235hp/325 Torque) even though the F150 5.4L was upgraded to (260hp) in '99.

Guess that wouldn't be revelant if the truck your looking at doesn't have the 5.4L.

Well I did it. The truck only had 27k miles on it, and for the price, I couldn't turn it down. So now I am an owner of an F250 Diesel.

Now I need some good advice...

This will be my first diesel, can you give me some advice on:
1) engine oil (synthetic or regular)
2) oil filters - difficulty in changing
3) fuel filters - This seems like a big deal from what I have heard
4) air filters - Should I get a KN?
5) any sensors or anything I should be aware of that me cause problems later.
6) I need an alignment, will I need to replace the cannisters?
7) Should I get a spray in bedliner, or a removable?
8) When should I "really" change the manual tranny fluid?
9) What is the water-catch container, I know it has something to do with the engine removing water from the gas. Is there any filters I need to be aware of?
10) I would like to put a 2" or 3" lift on it, any recommendations here?

Congrats on the truck:
Engine:
The engine (not the rest of the driveline) has a 100k mile warranty, so if you develop engine problems, don't hesitate to take it to the dealer..

Oil: Normal oil changed at recommended intervals will provide long life.. Remeber with a diesel, the fuel itself is sortof a lubricant.. Buy alot though, as it has a 15 quart oil capacity.

Oil filters: just buy the motorcraft one at wal-mart.. (its about $10)

Fuel filters: change at recommended intervals. .

air filters: Again, I'd stick with the Motorcraft filter.. K&N's although allow more air flow, have been shown in several studies to actually allow slightly larger particles through than the normal paper filter..
Sure, it allows more air in, and thus more power etc, but do you really need more power?

canisters? huh? Sorry, I don't understand this question.

bedliners: the drop in liners do wear the paint (where the liner rubs) which seems like an area that would be more likely to rust.. But 1000's of folks use them with no problems..
If you loading/unloading very heavy stuff all the time, the drop-in's slick surface makes this much easier..

If you haul smaller stuff that you don't want sliding around the bed all the time, the spray-in's (or even a rubber type bed-mat), work great.

tranny fluid: I would think somewhere around 30k miles or so..

water in fuel: Also there's a procedure for purging water from the system that should be followed.. (see www.ford-diesel.com) a site like this one that has great information on the use and care of the PSD

lifts: These are big heavy trucks with the PSD engine, be careful in your off-road adventures. They'll sink down in the mud pretty good..

Thanks for the info. As for the alignment, I think I meant to say camsters. Anyway, when I got an alignment for my F-150, They replaced some of the stock parts in order to get better angular adjustment - so I was wondering if the F250's had that same set up.

What lift options are available? I don't think I would want to go any higher than 3".
